Earlier this week I had about 300 MB of space left on my phone. Throughout the course of the week I have been downloading podcast, listening to them, and deleting them. Those are the only downloads I've made all week. Yet, somehow I'm down to 42 MB and I just don't understand how that is possible. I own an iPhone if that matters

Cache. All the stuff you do on your phone is stored as a temporary file. You can clear this and recoup some of that space.

Probably cache and app data as well as apps updating.
