A Maryland police officer has been dubbed a good Samaritan after buying two packs of diapers a struggling mother attempted to steal from a grocery store.

Rookie Officer Bennett Johns responded to a shoplifting call at a local grocery store. A young woman, who was with her infant son, bought groceries and discovered that she didn't have enough to purchase diapers. She was caught by security trying to steal two packs of diapers valued at $15.

As an act of kindness, Johns decided to buy the diapers himself after arriving on scene.

"Officer Johns considered the situation and then made the decision to purchase the diapers out of his own pocket so that the young child would not suffer," the Laurel Police Department wrote alongside a photo of Johns purchasing the diapers.

"Though it's but a snapshot of some of the work your officers are doing daily, we still wanted to take a moment to thank Officer Johns for not just fairly enforcing the law, but also showing empathy to an innocent child put in a difficult situation."

Laurel Police spokeswoman Audrey Barnes told CNN that Johns grew up with a single mom and understood the hardships mothers can face trying to provide for their children.
"Just out of personal kindness, he decided to go ahead and buy them," said Barnes. "It speaks to the heart of what community policing is all about."

The mother, whose name has not been released, was still issued a citation for theft and will have to appear in court. According to Maryland law as seen on the General Assembly of Maryland website, a person convicted of stealing items worth less than $100 could face up to 90 days imprisonment, a $500 fine, or both.

Some Facebook users took issue with Johns' decision to issue a citation, saying that he may have exacerbated the mother's hardship. "So hit her with a fine and court cost, but you bought her diapers, totally fixed all her problems," read one sarcastic comment. "Thanks so much...."

Others defended the cop, saying that he was simply doing his job.

"The cop did what he was supposed to do after the complaint was filed by the store," another person wrote. "It was his job to [c]ite, or arrest her. It's up to the store not to press charges, or the judge to let her off with a warning and a suspended sentence. This police officer deserves to be recognized for going over and above the call of duty."

CNN reports that the Laurel Police Department has since referred the mother to an advocacy organization helping struggling families. "We want to make sure she doesn't fall through the cracks," said Barnes.

Of course it's a rookie.

A few years of dealing with meth heads, gangbangers, drunk teens, pathological liars and getting called corrupt evil and horrific online by liberals everyday while you deal with them will quickly quell that spark of genuine compassion in your heart.

Never know if I should feel bad for cops or pity them.

most cops are good people.

the problems people have with cops are not predominantly because cops sometimes kill innocent people--it's that they get away with it.

You got a guy who plants a taser on a victim he shot in the back, whoops, hung jury.

You shoot an innocent australian woman in her pajamas, clearly the natural reaction to this is to posthumously issue and execute a search warrant on her.

kill a random dude because you showed up to the wrong house? oh well.

throw a grenade into a baby's crib with a baby in it? *shrug*

This is literally the kinds of shit the british were doing that caused the American Revolution.

We live in an age where literally most of America think George Zimmerman was a cop who shot a black child in the back of the head for no reason other than lol racism. Despite all the facts being too hand.

People don't wanna hear about cops dealing with groups of verbally abusive drunk 17 year olds, they don't wanna hear about the mountain of paperwork or the heartless women.

They want to hear "Cop is evil" then mentally masturbate to it for 14 minutes before the next Hollywood movie comes out

So is baby formula.

That's why most retail stores keep that shit behind the counter with the cigarettes.

Still I never had that stuff when I was a wee lad.

I just had plain old milk and I'm obviously not dead.

Depends on the mood or how busy the cop is at the time.

Worked at Walmart many years ago and seen cops let people go with a citation for stealing bullshit.

They didn't make an arrest unless violence or weapons were involved.

I've seen cops arrest people for stealing soda cans.

Reminds me of something a friend of mine who is a police chief once told me "If I followed anyone then it would take me less than half a day before they broke the law."

If you're a dick to a cop he can turn the tables on you with his magical book
