I heard the combat is boring (hence why they added a x4 speed up in the remaster), and it has some really dumb quirks, like you can't open 4 specific treasure chests or you won't get 100% and the game never tells you.

The speed up feature fixed the boringness of minor fights. Almost makes the game feel like a Boss Rush mode at times lol.

They removed the treasure chest thing, so don't have to worry about that.


As for the combat system, I love it. Its strategic and satisfying to me. If you don't like it though, I wouldn't get it. 95% of the game is that battle system.

It's a good game for 1/3 or 1/4 of the game before it forgets it has a plot and other characters than Balthier.

That's mostly for covering the vast areas in shorter time and for farming exp/rare chest spawns

They changed that for the original international version of the game which Zodiac version is based on.

It's okay. It feels like an offline MMO and I don't like real MMOs. Also I hate the the game feels like a side story for a much better plot we only see bits and pieces of.

ff12 had good gameplay
it was its plot that had problems
it was a really good plot on paper but it wasnt executed very well.


balthier doesnt bang fran. they are based on han solo and chewbacca that would be like han banging chewy.


the 4X speed was really just there to make traveling the world faster
the game has huge maps and a large open world to explore
it can get tedious walking from place to place in the original so it speeds up the process.

There are male viera in Ivalice, but they tend to live apart from females.

its not a one gender race its just males are rare so they are protected and arent really seen in public or given any important duties that could put them at risk

there were like 5 random chests in the world that if you opened would prevent the best weapon in the game from spawning in its own chest.

but even if you dont pick the 5 chests there was still only a 1% chance that you would get the best weapon if you opened its chest

Basically if you didn't open specific treasure chests, it would change the loot of one treasure chest towards the middle/end of the game. That treasure chest happened to have the best spear in the game, so it was a fairly big deal if you missed it.

The wolves have detailed buttholes in that game. Very high def

Most cons are fixed by the zodiac edition, but the biggest con is still that the techniques suck. There is like ONE physical attack skill that is somewhat useful. You're using party of mages tbh. Also, there's the same annoying issue which plagues all ff games, hp and dmg caps. Dmg caps makes summons and such useless in late game content.

Zodiac version removed the HP and Damage caps. Or rather raised them to beyond what you can reach.

Can anyone refresh me on how the original American job system worked? I don't remember having to plan out builds in the original, couldn't you do pretty much anything or am I confused? It's been a long as time and I never beat the game

Yep. It didn't have jobs. Any character could learn every ability and equip everything.

It was super boring.

You can do anything with a fully unlocked license grid, which is not hard to get to. Otherwise the characters begin with some slightly specialized skillsets. Late game is so boring though.

the original game has no job system
everyone had the exact same license board and you could build your cast of characters any way you want.

or you could make the all the same
or you could grind like crazy and fill everyones license board up.

the class thing was created for the international version but only let you pick 6 out of 12 jobs

this new version has all the improvements that international version had but lets you give every character 2 jobs instead of just 1 so you can use all 12 classes in one game

The Pros:

- quite possibly the most expansive and richly-detailed world in FF history
- the combat, while divisive, can be quite fun and engaging if you give it a chance.
- a shitload of side content
- Balthier
- Fran's backside

The Cons:

- Vaan actually deserves the hate
- several underdeveloped characters
- similarly, the story isn't bad (it's actually quite good in places), but a five-minute cutscene just can't stand against the 2-3 hours it took you roaming and fighting to get to it.

Balthier's the leading man, yes.

Technically Ashelia or Basch should probably have been the lead. Certainly not Vaan.

Yes. Vaan is a stock prettyboy added later in development to appease the Japanese fanbase, and actively brings the game down with his presence. Balthier has the best lines, most personality, and most character reveal / growth in the party (even over Ashe).

I just pretend that Balthier IS the main character and always control him when roaming around. Vaan is like some useless idiot that got caught up in something way bigger than himself all because he thinks he's some dumbass version of Robin Hood that steals from the rich and keeps it for himself but thinks he's doing the right thing.

"I'll take back what's ours derp!"

But hey, not every rpg needs the PC to be the protagonist. It's kinda neat when games take the outside looking in approach. Being the chosen one has lost it's appeal after playing a few dozen cookie cutter RPGs

balthier, basch and ashe all arguably deserve the lead role
vaan wasnt even intended to be in the game. he was added to appeal to the teenage demographic. he lifts right out of the story with very little changes. penelo also only exists because vaan does so she doesnt contribute much to the plot either (though i like her design) she at least has some interactions with larsa.

fran is barely anymore relevant than vaan.


i usually have balthier and penelo take turns being my party leader

There's several times in the story where he butts in in matters has no fucking thing to do with him and I just want to stab him in the throat, cut out his heart and force-feed it to Penelo.

That's not really true. She's Balthier's Chewbacca. She supports him as a character and enables his growth.

Honestly the only characters I remember from the game are Balthier and Vaan. Balthier for being good and Vaan for being terrible.
