For years, I've been gaming on a pretty good CRT SD TV, with various consoles. Today, I got a fairly expensive new TV. It's Sharp, which is a mid-level brand, 1080p HD, and in the 30 inch range. I was really pleased about getting it. I've now played on it, and now only is the quality not nearly as good as I thought, it's fucking worse than my old TV. The image is slightly blurry and fuzzy, not looking quite as sharp as on my 13-year old CRT TV. I can't believe this. I've tried it on 2 games, one of the 360, and one on the Wii U, which of course are both HD consoles, and the picture looks a bit worse than the old TV. What the fuck is happening? Are all HD TVs this bad? The picture quality isn't great all, and this isn't at all the huge improvement in gaming that people say going from SD to 1080 HP. Perhaps it's just the games I've played. I didn't know how much of an improvement this was going to be, but I didn't expect it to be WORSE. Am I doing something wrong? Why is it like this? It's like playing on really old 3D games with blurry textures and edges to things.

Are you using HDMI cables? Setting the systems to 1080p?

Sadly, I'm using Scart. The HDMI cable for my Wii U disappeared. But I used Scart for years with my 360, and it looked BETTER than this.

Will using an HDMI cable suddenly make things much better? Are HDMI cables compatible with the 360? Do consoles need to be set to 1080p?

Are you sure Scart isn't HD? I thought it was.

I assume I'll find the option to use the consoles in HD somewhere in their settings?

Yes, an HDMI cable makes a difference. And, if I recall, there are settings on the Xbox 360 you have to adjust to your monitor's resolution. Check the System Settings for display options.

Can you just stop arguing with us?

Scart is barely better than composite

And you should be able to tell us whether your 360 has an HDMI port. The oldest ones don't.

I don't think mine does then. It's a phat 360. I did buy it in 2009, though.

Hold on. If the 360 is an HD capable console, and the early models had only Scart ports, how could you use it in HD mode?

old old old old old XBox 360s didn't have HDMI, you needed the Xbox 360 Elite, to have HDMI.

After the first hardware revision, they had HDMI by default.

I can believe that you only owned a CRT up until now, but how have you not seen a game console on an HD TV at a friend's house or a store kiosk and would be asking if it makes a difference?

I thought it was the TV, maybe. I guess I should get an HDMI cable. They're very cheap anyway, apparently.

I'm still angry, though. The TV looks worse than the last one.

Because you have a PAL 360 and never bothered to get component cables for it. An ntsc 360 has component cables by default, which are hd. Scart is only hd under extremely uncommon circumstances and not yours.

That's not the issue. I had to temporarily downgrade when I brought my PS3 on vacation somewhere that only had a CRT and I had huge blurry problems trying to play a Blu-ray. A lot of people when moving from CRT to HDTV never moved back and never had this problem.

Early HDTVs were freaking terrible. They would frequently miss deadlines (though come to think this may have been a bandwidth thing), whole blocks of pixels would get stuck for several frames so it looked like the screen of an NES with a dirty cartridge, and then the lag, oh man.

What is it with CE and expecting everybody here to be an expect on computers? Not everyone works on an IT help desk, or is a software engineer, or someone who builds comptuers for a living (these are pretty laughable jobs).

I mean I've never been a tech person and I learned this stuff nearly a decade ago. Most people figure it's common sense by now but everyone's situation is different.

None of which are required for something as basic as this.
