Oedipus complex is often associated with condition where a boy have sexual or romantic attraction to their mother and sometimes hates their father because of jealously.

However, in the Oedipus story, Oedipus himself didnt know the woman was his mother. The point of the story itself wasnt about knocking your momma off her panties, it is more about the belief of totality or absolutelion of fate.

Its more of a you cant escape your destiny no matter what you do, if something unexpected happen willingly or not, it is already part of the script.

Oedipus didnt fell in love with his mom in his knowledge. He fell with a woman that actually his mom, but neither have the knowledge about it till it is too late.

the term was coined by Sigmund Freud and was defined about the mother/father issue, not about the fated tragedy from the original play.

I know. Its like our old pal siggy misinterpreted the point of the story or simply not care. Maybe he is too busy using coke and smoke tobacco too care, iunno.

in the play, Oedipus is aware that he is going to kill his father and marry his mother- so the symbolic desire to do that isn't too far from the story. it's still not a 1:1 fit in terms of the name correlating to the phenomenon but it's pretty close.
