L dies

Truthfully it goes downhill once Light loses his memories

I want to like Near but he's just so boring

I don't understand why Light immediately turns back to evil when he regains his memories after regaining the death note. Shouldn't his new memories about being horrified at the thought of Kira killing people conflict with his realization that he is Kira and has been murderizing people? I was hoping during that scene that there would be more of an internal struggle.

Also what happened to the Shinigami plot point in the death world? They were up to something but then the show just drops it.

I don't think he ever really struggles or is horrified as Light. It's a surface level defense mechanism but it doesn't run that deep. Remember at the start of the show he also has a brief moment where he seems horrified but what he's doing. But really Light is the kind of person who will do this if he has the power. Light even said during his memory loss that he finds himself agreeing with Kira

Am I the only one who still likes the second half?

Well, he wasn't being "evil" per se, but he was getting rid of anyone that could get him arrested.

I want to like the second half but it's kind of a different show

I like the idea of Near that he's like L except dispassionate and that allows him to win, but he's awfully boring

He agrees, and that's what scares him, before he regained the death note. He was scared at how eerily similar this Kira's way of thinking was to his, and I assumed that was going to lead to doubt somewhat over what he is doing since when being help up to a mirror people tend to reexamine who they are.
