Given that radical Islam was posing a threat to the world long before then, I'm not sure I ever would have ruled out all religious influence although... even with Islam you could argue that it's more a people fighting for their freedom from Western oppressors and influence. The religion in those nations was indistinguishable from the tribes/groups so the claim that their wars are based on religion could be a gross oversimplification as well.
