When I was a kid it was always the opposite that my primary pokemon friend bought.

Nowadays it's solely the mascot.

i did this for a few games just because my friends all got the same version so i wanted something different. but now i don't really know many people that play them still so i just go for whichever legendary looks more interesting although i don't even use legendaries.

if it's a remake then i go based on the exclusives.

USM are far closer to Emerald/Platinum than BW2. GF only made two versions because money.

Usually just look at the mascot.

That ended up burning me on Y though. The exclusives in that one were ass. Otherwise it's never mattered.

The cooler mascot is my first priority. Next-up is what Pokemon are available in which version.

However, with Sumo, I actually ended up buying Sun first because everyone I knew was getting Moon. Ultimately didn't matter since I didn't really interact with any of them, but that was why I went with Sun. That and Vulpix.
