The sausage roll took the place of baby Jesus in the festive scene After the image appeared online, Beth Rosenberg tweeted: Out of interest do you think the people at Greggs understand that Jesus was Jewish and serving up a pork sausage roll in the manger is unbelievably inappropriate? While James Mather said: Im no prude, but equating Jesus, a Jew, to a sausage roll really is deeply offensive on all sorts of levels. And it seems their cries of outrage have been heard, with the company based in the North-East apologising for the ad. Were really sorry to have caused any offence, this was never our intention, a spokesperson told the Northern Echo. Not everyone shared in the outrage, with food writer Jay Rayner tweeting: This is appalling this is outrageous as a Jew I strongly ooh, Greggs sausage roll. Each door on the Greggs advent calendar reveals a tear-off token that can be taken into Greggs shops and exchanged for items from the Christmas and wider menu, including the Festive Bake, flavoured lattes, sweet mince pie and a sausage roll. On Christmas Eve, a 5 gift card sits behind door 24. This stems from epidemics of parasitic infection from pork (that likely wasn't being cooked properly) in that region in ancient times. Pigs were considered unclean because of people getting sick, so they stopped eating pork and both religions banned it.
