I would give a shit about what these idiots on reddit say about net neutrality if they had any track record of caring about a fair and balanced internet.

It's a relatively big issue. This brand of apathy/"I don't care because these people are idiots" attitude is why we get shit like Trump as President.

It's like people have to have an incentive to do shit other than oggle news sites and sit staring at HBO/Netflix all day.

I'm not saying you should support net neutrality or not support it, but at least make an opinion on an issue off a non stupid basis.

Yeah, but is letting a horrible law pass to spite a bunch of assholes really the best solution? Didn't we get enough of that last year?

I don't have a solid opinion, I can see both sides. I'm inclined to want net neutrality to remain only because I'm afraid to open up that pandora's box, and I think ISPs are not pure free market entities like most big corporations. But in a pure free market environment I would be more in favor of opening the internet up to free market forces.

Because a small group of monopolies owning all the companies involved isn't a free market.

Um, it depends how the monopolies formed and maintain themselves.

Did the monopoly form because one entity provides a service better and more efficiently than any other competing services? Or did it form because it relies on the power of the state like a leach to throw obstacles in the way of competition?

Your saying a free market doesn't stop being a free market if it naturally stops being a free market?

Why would it not be a terrible thing? What about places that only have one ISP? The town I live in has a single ISP providing high-speed internet, for example.

If I have to start paying additional costs simply to access my email, or to check my bank or pay bills, I'm literally strung up by the neck and given the option to pay and live, or not and die.

A couple towns over where a friend lives is in the same situation, except the USPS office closed there as well, so regular snail mail delivery isn't even guaranteed and is commonly late.

"Having to pay extra to access these things is no big issue to me" is because, honestly, these people really don't care about anyone other than themselves.

The internet is very much a part of every day life in this country--more so than phone service and TV at this point I would say. Kneecapping it to a large portion of the country when there are still places that don't even have the service is not currently the answer.

Well I understand that argument and it's a fair concern, that's why I say I'm more inclined to side with net neutrality in our current situation. I'm just saying that in a free market where there would be more competition in ISPs, this would not be such a huge deal. In fact, it would probably work out in favor of the consumers. So I'm not against it in principle, but the ISPs as they are shouldn't be given this power, I agree.

There are packages for that now.

Except when net neutrality goes away, costs are going to hike up and the speeds will be even lower.
