Which one

Cats and Dogs are the most common for a reason... they're by far the best. Still, the concept of alternate pets is kind of interesting, and this poll doesn't even go into actual exotic pets.

I was going to do this on Pets/Animals but that has practically zero activity.

I don't know. I haven't even owned/experienced a pet besides cats/dogs. Other than a wild baby rabbit once, which was terrible as a pet once it grew up.

I want to get a ferret.
I would name him Ferret Bueller, and occasionally give him a day off.
He would also have a little hat.

Hard choice. Ferrets are adorable, but they're also suicidally destructive to your stuff. Rats are adorable, but they tend to die of cancer all the time. Lizards and turtles are pretty cool, but come with salmonella risks. I chose large parrot although they have huge issues as well. They need loads of attention or they get depressed and/or evil, they live for a veeerryyy long time, so you better be really sure before going into it... But they're extremely intelligent, social, loyal, and fun. I'd never own one because of owning cats, but it's a cool animal.

Rats freak me out.
I don't find them to be adorable but maybe that's just me.

I have three small parrots (green cheek conures) and they're fucking rad. Their speech is kind of weak, but you can tell what they're saying once you've heard it a few times. They get a different voice when they try to speak English. They know our names and each others' names. It is super weird when I uncover them in the morning and they yell my name though... or if somebody says my name, they look at me...

Why do 2 specific Bird types take up 2 options and then you have another for any type of bird? And no farm animals? Or even a generic "Other" option.

Only animal I have listed here is a Turtle but there very obnoxious to take care of sometimes.

They actually look pretty bad-ass. I saw one on TV the other day and thought "I want a pet skunk." I've been helping out at a wildlife centre for a year and a half now but I've yet to see one :(

Shit. we got this huge-ass trumpeter swan (their wingspan is 10 feet) the other day that can actually break a person's arm if they hit it with their wing the right way. The dude is salty as fuck too. It took three of us today to give him his medicine.

Can't think of a good third, although a horse is a baller pet. Granted, not practical for a lot of areas, etc, though. I guess teacup pigs are cute and compact while offering the same companionship as a dog or cat. A monkey of some kind would probably be a lot of fun and even a ferret you can train.

While I like lizards, snakes, turtles, etc, they're kinda shit companion pets. Then fish and birds are cool but you can't really interact with them, except for the larger, more obnoxious birds. I've had a lot of small rodents as pets which I like but they're not great companion pets.

Rats seem to freak most people out. Apparently it's the tail because it's too worm like or something. That and their bad portrayals in movies, probably. But they are the sweetest little things, and smart.

A deglanded skunk really does seem to be an excellent pet from what I've seen of people raising them. They're sooo friendly and curious, especially as babies. And sooo cute. But there's legality problems and issues with finding an exotics vet with those.

It still burns my toast that ferrets are illegal in the state of California. Of all the things to outlaw.

I always wanted a pet fox because I think theyre cute but then I found out that they pee on everything and they smell horrible and you cant really train them and that they are super territorial and destroy everything and most dogs hate them

So now I want to pet a fox

Ridiculous fantasy pet: bats. Bats are very clever, and very sweet when they've been hand raised. All sorts of problems both practical and moral with raising a wild animal, and it's a bad idea, but still fun to imagine.

My mom had a pet squirrel growing up. Dude was a bitey jerk who threw things at the family all the time.

i believe you meant "best pet besides a dog?" since there can only be one "best" and dogs are clearly best

Depends what you mean by best, there are problems with all sorts of exotic abimals, but the benefits outweigh them for the most part or people wouldnt keep them as pets.

Skunks have been mentioned, but i would like to add they appearently like to burrow and can scratch up floors/make a huge mess.

Same with foxes, saw a youtube video of a guy leaving the house for an hour without fox proofing it and stuff was everywhere.

Rats are pretty good, socialable, trainable, cuddly, but the life span is short, sickness is plentiful because it is hard to get good fancy rats, they like to chew up your cords and furniture if left out and can get stressed and anxious if stuck in the cage or left alone for too long.

Farm animals can be great companion pets. Goats, horses, pigs, but city ordinances can make owning them tough and they often have other issues with them.
