because when it's 110 degrees for 4 months and it drops down to 60-70 that's a 40-50 degree difference than we're used to. plus there's very little humidity so we get closer to what the true temperature feels like.

Uh Ernie weighs 14 lbs, has hair not fur and gets shaved every six weeks so he can stay hygienic and comfortable. He needs a sweatshirt or pajamas to stay warm and comfortable in the winter. It'd be abusive for me to keep him cold because some people don't like dogs wearing clothes. He loves his pajamas and will stay in them until we take them off. Even if he didn't need them it's not abusive to put jammies on your dog lmao

Dogs kept indoors don't develop proper protective coats for large temperature ranges. It's pretty common to see small dogs or short coated dogs (shaved dogs included) that prefer wearing coats and/or clothing

One dog I fostered would bring her jacket to me when she wanted to go out. She was ecstatic wearing it.

Ernie has some light blue long johns and a Totoro hoodie. I just bought him some fleece polka dot jammies and some gray knitted jammies. He's gonna be so excited.

He also has a couple holiday sweaters that he wears when we go to parties during the holiday season.

the house i live in was built in the 70s and has barely any insulation left. it's cold if we don't have the heat on in the winter and we don't use the heat. instead we just bundle up and put jammies on the dog. ernie weighs 14lbs and is 12 years old. he gets cold and i'm not gonna make him freeze because people don't like pajamas on dogs.

The other reason is more about psychology. I'm not going to categorically lump everyone who puts clothing on their dogs in this group, but I think a vast majority of people who dress their dogs up, do it because they see them as a child substitute. Granted they require similar care to a young child as far as not being able to feed themselves or go to the bathroom by themselves, but I think people are mentally substituting them for a baby they didn't or couldn't have, or for kids that have left home. Sometimes it happens when a child is in the house because the dog isn't argumentative. I phrased it that way, instead of saying the dog isn't bad, because a lot of them are. People feel like a talking teenager should know better. The dog should know better as well, but because they can't talk and they're dependent, it's easier to see them as a child and forgive bad behavior. It's also the reason people like cats and dogs like pugs and boston terriers. They have large eyes in proportion to their heads and this makes them seem child like.
