Most of the users there are disgruntled employees who will spend all their time stroking their ego and completely shut down the odd customer or who has something critical to say.

I saw a subreddit post for Best Buy where the mod actually flaired the post as lil bitch. Classy

I can guarantee that whatever the customer has to say, has been heard before and nobody there can do anything about their complaint unless a VP or something just happens to browse the subreddit.

Most employees don't have any stock in the company, therefore can give no fucks about what you think of the company.

I first enjoyed a few stories from /r/talesfromretail but it soon became painfully apparent that most of these stories are humongously exaggerated revenge fantasy stories and 100% not how it actually went down.

I now just get a savage enjoyment at the sheer entitlement of some of these assholes who apparently lose their fucking mind any time a customer is disgruntled about anything.

Same goes for /r/talesfromtechsupport. Sure, there are some dumbass users out there, but there's also a fair share of super smug tech guys with zero social awareness who take a little too much glee that $user didn't understand a fairly advanced technical problem.

It certainly goes both ways.

A lot of retail/customer service/hospitality staff just don't want to admit that sometimes, the squeeky wheel gets the oil, and just being nice all the time isn't necessarily going to get you what you actually should as a customer.

and that also goes both ways. Complaining for the sake of complaining will likely just get you banned from the store. People think the louder you complain the more free stuff you get but it'll just lead to you not being invited back.

I mean if you're in the right, and the employees aren't seeing it, then go ahead and complain. I know I do it for Amazon when I pay for shipping and the product isn't here on their guaranteed date. But I'm not going to complain to Amazon about the quality of something I ordered.

this is real unlikely to happen with any larger corporation

Oh no doubt, customers are assholes. And a lot of the time they're just unreasonable and stupid. But the kinds of people who post their stories on talesfromretail...I think some of them need a reality check, or a different job or something. Because whatever they think it's not normal for someone to be hyper aware of when someone is about to finish their shift and how inconvenient it would be to ask them for help finding something, nor is it normal for customers to know the layout of the store to the same degree that the employee does.

That's how a lot of those stories go. "I was just finishing my shift when some soccer mom asked me where the milk is (ugh), I told her I was finished and she flew off the handle and she complained to my manager trying to get me fired and my manager had my back and told her to leave. Everyone in the store applauded and a kind old gentleman handed me a crisp $100 bill"

Also unfortunately, if I'm dealing with someone who hates their job and hates making any effort at all, sometimes putting pressure on them is the only way to get shit to happen. Being nice and friendly to someone who has already had their soul destroyed from working in retail for 10 years isn't going to get you anywhere a lot of the time. They'll just say sorry, can't help you etc. when you know that actually, if it was important enough to them they absolutely could.

How about you try working in a retail store or restaurant when you finally turn 16 and see what it's like to be in their shoes making shit money dealing with entitled pricks all day that scream in your face when you run out of an item.

Also, when I worked in retail, 98% of the people I worked with never complained about someone coming in 30 minutes before closing.

Aren't most subreddits like that.

That is why not like Reddit that much. Say I watch a episode of (New Action Marvel Hit). And I didn't like it. There use to be places were I can respectfully talk about why I didn't like it.And people could have good conversation about it. Now that most things moved to Reddit it gets down voted and no one ever sees it.

Same thing with store reddits.

Depends largely on the subject matter but yes, most subreddits are circlejerky by the very nature of the upvote/downvote system. People crave approval and the only way to get it on reddit is to post the status quo.

You'll find that the community is slightly better on more "adult" subreddits, like stuff to do with woodworking instead of /r/gaming.

Being a janitor at a retail place/restuaruant isn't really that hard to do though..you need education for that?

Retail is a shitty job unless it's super high end, but even then it's still pretty shitty. Best Buy employees are the worst though. They literally don't do shit, don't know shit, and they still have something to complain about every day.
