Persia was amazing until Islam ruined it. They fought a bloody war with Byzantium prior to that, and because both of them essentially knocked each other's block off, the invading Muslims conquered and converted the entire region, signalling the end to both once great empires. Even the 1979 revolution was a sham. It was supposed to lead to a proper democracy, but the extremists took advantage of the anarchy and before anybody knew what happened, an Islamic Republic was declared and fun was promptly banned.
