I want a game where I can listen to podcasts while I play. Basically minimal dialogue or at least infrequent dialogue with large stretches of no dialogue or plot.

It's an RPG so the dialogue is a major part of it, but it's still very easy to follow without paying much attention to it if all you're doing is fetch quests.

I mean if you weren't going to play it before then go ahead and play it however you want, but it's still not the ideal experience to do it your way.

I mean...kind of?

There's a lot of dialogue but outside of like two parts I don't remember having to actually listen to anything in order to proceed. The game holds your hand pretty well.

I'd say there are far more stretches of parts where there isn't any actual storytelling dialogue than there are with.

lmao hell no it's not dialogue or plot heavy. You can explore and just kill things. The story is extremely shallow. It might as well be a first person Diablo.

Well, it' certainly designed to be plot and dialogue heavy. But NPCs rarely say anything of actual substance.

Just make sure you have the volume up any time Balgruuf, Paarthurnax, Arngeir, Esbern, or a Dark Brotherhood member speaks. On the other hand, you can just make up your own dialogue on the spot during the College and Thieve's Guild questlines and very likely come up with something more interesting / coherent than what's already there.

There are always subtitles.

They never have anything interesting to say. I think the Warrior's Guild questline is like 7 or 8 quests long and you already know the full plot by the end of the second quest.

You can skip all the dialogue and still have a blast. Follow the waypoints and tear shit up.

True; that's why I singled out the NPCs who have both good plot moments and pipes worth listening to. At the very least, a noteworthy chunk of the budget had to go towards Christopher Plummer and Max Von Sydow's VA fees; might as well enjoy the fruits of their labor.

And the Companions questline is pretty bad plotwise, but it's at least short and benign. The College is bad, but still kinda short. The Thieve's Guild's plot is just downright awful though; it truly feels like both the writers and the characters acting out said writing are just making shit up as they go along.

My favorite part about the Thieves Guild is that there's a really cool mechanic where you can steal a special hidden item in each quest to add to your collection at the guild hideout.

Except there's a glitch which prevents you from completing the collection and subsequently that collector quest unless you use a console command. And I don't know if they ever fixed it.

They actually finally fixed that one; haven't had an issue with it in the last couple playthoughs, and I don't use the unofficial patch.

One you look past the abyssmal main plot, the TG side content is pretty great, actually. Repeatable radiant burglary missions was an excellent idea IMO, right up there with repeatable assassination contracts once the DB is done.
