I've never owned a gun, and my family doesn't own guns. My grandpa owns a gun for hunting, but that's about it, it's locked away all other times. As someone that doesn't have a lot of experience with guns, it's hard for me to understand why gun owners put so much value in their guns. It's almost like asking for increased gun control is hurting them in some way. To the outside perspective, it seems like they value their right to shoot guns over the safety of others.

Yeah, the second one seems like a big one. But I feel like most people don't want to ban guns or take the right to purchase from people, they want some guns banned and to make it more difficult to make the purchase

Why is your right to bear arms so important to you though, that's what I don't understand

Having the ability to protect my family with the same weapon an attacker would use against me is pretty important.

Fair.

What about having to go through a psych evaluation to purchase guns? Would you be against this?

It's fun popping off rounds aside, for the reason intended. It keeps our government in check. Why do you think dems want citizens disarmed so bad?

Which guns are these? That people that want "some guns" banned generally fall into two categories:

-they don't know anything about guns and want particular models banned
-they want all semi-autos banned

My father told me being a man is owning up to your mistakes, trying to make the best decisions, and loving your family. Never mentioned guns. Was also in the military.

Hey congratulations for being such a tough guy.

Our president and vice president and their families get to have secret service protect them with automatic weapons. Marines guard the White House. The wealthy elite have their own private security. These people, though have more important jobs, are still just fellow citizens. And I will not accept anyone telling me that some Americans get to have their own personal security (sometimes at the taxpayer's expense) but that I'm not free to purchase my own firearm for my own defense.

anyone who asks that question should atleast go shooting once. it may or may not change your mind, but atleast youd have a little better understanding.

as far as asking for gun control thats largely because it never stops at one aspect. the US has gotten a substantial amount of it already (despite even our laws now. you used to be able to own a real machine gun freely) and when something happens anyway that made the previous law pointless you will have people coming up with more laws to try and "fix" things and leave the previous stuff there anyway. it never stops. gun control never means anything for the second amendment or the gun community. there is NEVER any compromise, gun control advocates are all take, take and take and never give. despite what some people may feel it ALWAYS ends in either bans or uber strict regulations to where that its not even worth bothering with. thats why its so hard to get stuff done in thsi coutnry on gun control. especially after the 94 AWB which made a lot of gun owners wake up to the situation.

Those two statements can be separated, although some families probably do train their sons that way. What I mean is that having a firearm does equal the field of combat, at least moreso than one person having a gun and their opponent not having one. That could be seen as a weak man being equal to a strong man, but Im not sure why people imply that is a bad thing. Is it wrong, for example, that a woman doesnt have to fear a male attacker, if she carries a gun?

As for the gun conveying masculinity, there is certainly a bit of tradition that is passed on from some fathers to some sons. Thats never the be-all-end-all of manhood, though, and its not as if girls shouldnt be trained to use firearms correctly and safely.
