Have you "fought" over getting to pay the bill at a restaurant before?

I am sure some of us have gotten into tug-of-wars with the bill when trying to treat some friends, guests, elderly/younger family members, etc for special occasions. I'm not counting situations where it's just a casual dinner with friends/family and you're just taking turns to pay the bill or splitting the bill.

My sister and brother-in-law were visiting my aunt and uncle in Taiwan recently and at one point my sister tried the "bathroom break" trick to pay the bill. She got caught however as both her and my uncle kinda raced to the cashier. Though my sister got to the cashier first my uncle told the cashier my sister was a guest so the cashier defaulted to giving the bill to my uncle instead.

Personally for me I have had my share of tug-o-war with the bill so now I usually try and sit where the waiter/waitress would approach near me and I would have my credit card ready to hand over immediately. Only once did I arrived early to give my credit card to the waiter/waitress before the rest of the group arrived.

Yes a going away party for a friend. We all agreed she should not pay. But I wanted to pay for everyone..... so a week before I bought a gift card with enough to pay for everyone.... they all wanted to be the one to pay for everyone but yea.... I won. They'd then start trying to trick me into giving me the money back but I won this fight.

Yes but fought is probably an exaggeration. If Im visiting friends from out of town, or if friends from out of town are visiting me, I generally want to pay. The most Ill do is try and snag the bill when it comes, but if theyre quicker and insist then I just offer to get the next one.

Interesting approach. Does having the gift card made the others more willing to yield to you since you can use that as an excuse to use the gift card or something?

ng the gift card made the others more

well... they still fought with me about it in the end, but when the bill came I just grabbed the bill held up the card and said it's all paid for.
They argued me and like i said after it was all said and done they'd try to trick me into taking their money at work but yeah in the end I won out in paying the bill.
I felt it was more my responsibility that because we were all friends at work the one leaving was my neighbor and kind of like an aunt to me.
I knew however that none of them at the table were going to let me just take out cash and pay for it so the gift card gave me the excuse to say it was already paid for there was no other way I'd have been able to pay for it.
They argued that I was the one who gathered all her friends from work (she had to quit cause she got really sick at the end of her final days and almost died) and because of this neither me or her should pay.

I've been in very mild/calm tug-o-wars before but I always just tell to relax and we'll just split it unless I've intentionally invited someone out/it's for their benefit in which case I just give the person at the counter my card and distract the person while they put it through.
