President Donald Trump on Thursday suggested using the death penalty on drug dealers to address the opioid epidemic, equating providing lethal drugs with murder.

"We have pushers and drugs dealers, they are killing hundreds and hundreds of people," Trump said at a White House summit on opioid abuse. "If you shoot one person, they give you life, they give you the death penalty. These people can kill 2,000, 3,000 people and nothing happens to them."

Trump said countries that impose the death penalty on drug dealers have a better record than the United States in combating substance abuse.

"Some countries have a very, very tough penalty the ultimate penalty and by the way, they have much less of a drug problem than we do," he said.

Personally I am in the "no" camp, getting spooky Duterte vibes here.

How many couldn't get any more oxy, and ended up buying fentanyl "perc" in some shady alley?

Large amounts of fentanyl should at least get some Reagan era sentences.

How many binged and OD'd after trying to get clean, after an arrest or intervention or something?
How many couldn't get any more oxy, and ended up buying fentanyl "perc" in some shady alley?

It's both, I've know plenty of people that were clean for a while, did it once and then they found it was laced with fentanyl after doing the drugs tests

The idea is a non-starter. You'd have to get 60 votes in the senate to overturn a century of due process, cruel and unusual punishment, and equal protection laws and go further in the opposite direction from all other developed countries. If that same sentiment of "what if it affected you personally?" wasn't enough to get them to overturn cases that outlawed the death penalty for rape, even of children and murder by minors, it's not gonna happen for drug dealers.

Because, every "crackdown" just makes everything much worse. This wasn't a huge "crisis" when was mostly just Limbaugh going deaf on oxy.

Using drugs is a choice. Drug dealers should be punished for selling drugs and helping addicts but shouldnt be put to death because some addicts die of overdoses. That would be like putting gun store employees to death for selling weapons that lead to people blowing their brains out.

No. No it won't. It will lessen ODs significantly, as there's not going to be as much sudden binging into reduced tolerance.

Ideally, as harsh as it seems, burnouts are still going to burn out, and nothing will stop that, so let them.
As is, the functional users and addicts are caught in the crossfire of the delusion that we can somehow cause wasteoids to suddenly transform into productive members of society by simply declaring some odd thing to be prohibited, and locking them in a cage for twenty years when they do it anyway.

Lmao, a huge amount of the opiouds in circulation were legally obtained from a doctor. This is asinine at best. Until we have a complete reform of medical opiouds prescriptions this is impossible to enforce

The whole opioid scandal really started because insurance companies felt that it was too expensive for them to cover it.

Yeah abuse is bad and all. But the reason it's an issue is purely because rich people don't want to lose money.
