Emile Durkheim

Max Weber

Oh. I think some of Weber's "theories" made him look like an idiot and a psycho. That's just me, though, I guess.

Yes. He was one of the most important sociologists of all time. And so was Durkheim.

TBQH, I hadn't heard of these people until 2 or 3 days ago, and they're to sociology as Freud was to psychology, and Spielberg is to films.

Definitely heard of them. I think I heard of Durkheim in Criminology and Weber in my Poli-sci classes. I might be wrong.

I mean you have to keep in mind the context that these guys were writing in and not get too bogged down in the specifics - same with Freud. They were pioneers so they're not always going to be on the mark - it's their approach and new ways of thinking about the field that are important and admirable

It's strange. They really are top-tier names in sociology, but I hadn't even heard of them until last week. I can't tell if I'm pretty ignorant, or if sociology isn't deemed that important by society.

o_o

Does anyone want to discuss Weber's ideas? I think his idea that Christianity is meant to make people rich is absolutely ridiculous, but obviously he thought it made sense.

@InYourWalls1

"Important and admirable"? How much were you paid to say that?

I wonder if you can have a good career with a degree in sociology.
