They sent us some damn thing saying we owe $1700 due next month or well face a buttload of fees

Its from our taxes 2 years ago where we paid almost $2500, theyre disputing an education credit because they dont know if my wife was actually in school at the time, which she totally was and can verify with them

Literally the first thing theyve sent us about this and they want nearly $2k in less than a month when annual taxes are about to be due on top of that. If the dispute were legitimate wed be doomed.

What a bunch of incompetent buttheads.

obviously, doesnt mean I cant vent my frustration with their thuglike tactics. Springing an amount like that on a family with such a short window to pay up in a financially strenuous time?

That could legitimately destroy some households.

Im 100% positive their demands came with paperwork to set up a payment plan. Their interest rates are actually ridiculously low. The idea theyre going to RUIN YOUR LIFE for $2,000 is a load. Read the paperwork. Theyre actually very reasonable.

Nothing about a payment plan in this notice, so you happen to be wrong about that but Im sure it would be easy to set one up, we wont end up needing to do that though, we will be able to take care of this tomorrow.

$2000 with little notice is absolutely enough to sink plenty of households that are living paycheck to paycheck.

Mead is right. This could do pretty good damage in some households. Just because you could pay it doesn't mean everyone could. I couldn't pay that without doing bad things to get the money...

giving you a month to do something you can easily do hardly seems like "thug-like tactics." Especially since you could send the information by mail at the very last possible day, and it'd still count as part of the month. They're not trying to screw you, they're giving you a lot of room to do this.

And I bet if you called them up, you could even get an extension without fines. The IRS doesn't want to hurt you, it just wants to make sure you've payed what you owe.

In most cases they even give you money back at the end of the year. The IRS is like, the world's nicest tax collector.

Theyre incompetent. Theyve had no problem verifying this information in years prior or the year after.

Notifying us about a discrepancy from two years ago a few weeks before the amount is due when it is already tax season is downright irresponsible of them.
