I'm working on my guide for it right now and I want to talk about Yakuza. Keep me focused, is what I'm asking.

I love how many of the restaurants in Kamurocho are real places. I just learned there's an Ikinari Steak in NYC and now I want to go try it next time I'm there.

Are you familiar with standard Yakuza style?

Basic gameplay involves following a story set in and around a fictional red light district in Tokyo known as Kamurocho (based on the real Kabukicho). The moment-to-moment amounts to exploring said district, getting involved with the people there, the businesses, and the attractions. This is all punctuated by combat, done either as part of the story or via random battles that approach you on the streets. Combat is a step above basic beat-em-up, but not quite as complicated as character action games. High focus is placed on heavy hits and "Heat Actions", which expend a "Heat" energy meter in order to deliver powerful and visceral blows.

The setting is incredibly well-realized and beautiful, trading off the greater size of sandbox games for a greater level of individual detail in shop fronts, streets, advertisements, etc.

Is combat less fun because you only have one style?

Combat is stripped down, not only compared to Yakuza 0 and Kiwami but even compared to Yakuza 5, in my opinion. It makes sense: Kiryu is older and starting to get busted. There's still a decided pop to using Heat Actions, and there's an "Extreme Heat" buff you can apply your Heat to that allows you to deliver crushing blows within your combo.

But yeah, ultimately, it's not as varied as having the multiple styles of those other games.

Is Anri Okita in the demo? >_>

Full live chat is not available in the demo. I have access to a Live Chat related substory, but I haven't progressed it yet, or seen if it could be progressed.

Are you getting the Asia English version (which was released on 20th March)? Will that be 100% identical to the delayed US and Eu version?

*I remember referring to your guide for most of my time with 0.

Well no it won't be 100% identical, because obviously the US/EU version failed compliance submission, while the same version passed AS compliance.

But it will likely be 99.8% identical. >_>

And no, regardless of me wanting to get a jump on my guide, I've already pre-ordered the "After Hours" special edition, and don't really want to pay for the game twice. The demo has given me a considerable jump already. Guide's almost 100K right now.

I heard they took out a lot of minigames. That true?

They did. There are no gambling games. No pachinko. No bowling or billiards. No shogi. Of the "classic" minigames that they kept in, there's the Batting Center, Darts, Karaoke, Mahjong, and the classic arcade games from Y0. Also the cabaret clubs are still around if you count that as a minigame. There are like eight new minigames, though. The Cat Cafe, Live Chat, Spearfishing, Sandlot Baseball, the Clan Creator (if you count that as a minigame), Puyo Puyo, Virtua Fighter 5 FS, Gym workouts, and there are Bar Chats you can do as well.

Missed the boat on that, I'm afraid. Not that it would have mattered. They locked it up in a couple of days anyway.

The US/EU version got delayed by a month. The most likely reason, according to just about anyone who has ever worked QA for video games, is that it failed compliance submission, basically the final check by the publisher (Sony) to make sure a bunch of obscure little boxes are checked. These can go from formatting language issues or something as odd as "what happens when I plug in a Guitar Hero controller?"

We'll never know exactly what caused it to fail submission, but for some reason the Asian Sony office doesn't have the same level of QA and passed it for release.

Hmm so they put more in then they took out. Doesn't sound too bad then.

Well technically no. All the gambling games added up to eight on their own (Baccarat, Poker, Blackjack, Roulette, Oicho-kabu, Koi-koi, Cho-han, and Cee-lo). Still, those have been in the past five Yakuza games, so they've had their turn.
