because he doesn't care and thought that he could do get away with it? there's any number of reasons. a chemical attack did happen and russia denying it essentially confirms it was done by assad.

Seems like you've already decided from the get-go that this attack was done by Asssd, dreamvoid. If denying involvement is an admission of guilt to you, then what is the appropriate response Russia could have given instead?

Not to mention, a chemical attack would just keep the U.S. in Syria longer, which benefits Israel and Saudi Arabia more than Iran and Russia.

they didn't deny involvement. they denied it even happened which is a huge difference.

Assad is not seriously considering Trump in his decisions to attack Syrians, because why the fuck would he? Trump proved last year, by not following up on the initial strike of the Syrian airfield with ANY sort of fleshed-out policy for what to do in and about Syria, and again with his comments about leaving last week, that he really doesn't care what happens there. Short of directly attacking US troops, Assad isn't going to convince Trump to stay any longer than the US generals deem absolutely necessary.

Using chemical weapons on an opposition holdout furthers Assad's short term goals and does not at all hurt his long term goals. Forgive me for not buying the pleas of innocence from the authoritarian dictators Assad and Putin who have proven time and again their willingness to kill their own people.
