Like about video games or whatever.

If I just cared enough about sports to pay attention to them, I could literally do the same kind of thing at any given bar when a game is on.

But I don't care enough about sports.

Don't mind me. Just thinking out loud.

I kind of feel the same way about stuff like philosophy or whatever, it's really cool being around people who share those hobbies.

Casual banter with people you have nothing in common with is fun too but it rarely goes past just-for-kicks exchanges, and then you get into a situation where when you're around such people you always have to be funny or lighthearted or whatever.

Sorry could you elaborate on this? I'm not entirely sure what you meant by it.

I told someone today that I majored in philosophy after they asked, and they were like, "what's that"

I brought up Plato and Socrates so that they might get some kind of idea of what I was talking about, but it didn't ring any bells for them.

didn't mean to go off on a tangent, but I thought that was pretty interesting

When you're around people where you share a hobby, the tone of conversation doesn't always default to casual lighthearted banter. When you're around people who you don't have a lot in common with, it seems the only appropriate emotion is lighthearted mirth.

Interesting. I don't always feel that way. Sometimes you can speak to people about current events or other subjects and it doesn't necessarily have to be lighthearted, although you do try to at least want to keep it friendly and on an even keel.

Well the good thing is that video games are I think becoming more and more mainstream, at least enough to have some conversations about them with a greater amount of people. Guarantee you that in the same said sports bar there would be many at least casual gamers that would be willing to converse on the subject

I have certainly found more people in my casual life who will talk about games, but then there's the idea of the breadth of video games out there.

In the same vein as a baseball fan may not be big on hockey, someone like me doesn't have much to talk about in regards to Overwatch or Minecraft.
