One of my favorite history related youtuber and i think he is one of the sane voice to speak out against this whole fiasco.

I agree wholy with him and i find it sad even they said wanted to honor african people and those of african descent, yet all they do is never represent actual rich and varied culture of africa. All they do is switch the skin pallete of pre established Caucasian/European characters and say it is incluvise and progressive and shit. In fact, i find it offensive that people want to include PoC yet dont have confidence in representing accurately their culture wont sell. Do a show set in one of the many powerful and huge historical african kingdom or empires, for example the great zimbabwe which ruins still stand tall today, their cities were fully enclosed, walled protected with beatiful white great wall that shines in the desert, the inside are sprawling cities, complex class system, government and culture. Now thats how you respect african culture and not just tarnish history just by skin pallete swap.

I don't think they ever got farther than Nubia tho. And they didn't penetrate south of the Sahara.

not to a comparable level

we're still not even sure if the lemba were semitic. there's very little in the form of primary source text about the society, just artifacts.

greek history was recorded by unreliable narrators...but it was recorded.

In a language that can hardly even be comparable to English. Most history is fiction, I love reading history, but come on.

Greek history (or the epics/tales) are far more commonly known by your average person, so more likely to draw interest as well. So something that is more likely to be considered profitable by studios perhaps.

It's a damn fantasy show with gods and shit, that they have fantastical and ahistorical stories premade for us is a huge plus for them

cut the false equivalence

most history is not pure fiction even if media adaptation of it is.

primary source documents have value and our understanding of great zimbabwe is significantly less in a quantifiable, real way

i don't doubt that enjoyable fiction could be created about great zimbabwe based on what we know of it, and i don't disagree that nearly all media adaptation of history is pure fiction.

i do think it's important to note that public interest in historical fiction is enhanced by the availability/general knowledge of nonfiction history relating to the subject

i am not saying it can't be done just that it's harder

there's no reason to use fallacies and deny this. it would still be a worthwhile project and apollo makes a valid point that we are sitting on a resource that we could use. i am simply noting it is not as easy as retelling stories we've already told

It is. I never say i hate artistic license, as long it follows common knowledge and logic. They can easily fill the holes citing artistic license as long its not ridiculous like making shen long appear in africa, or make the king of zimbabwe a tibetan monk to draw huge chinese market share or pander toward asian minorities or whatever.

When you fill a hole in your teeth, do you use cement and mortar or actual use material thats friendly on organic environments, nerves and other biological need? Of course the latter.

Same with filling holes in history when you want to make a fiction around it
