Man that was amazing.

If you get the ending, it is just so damn brilliant. I only have few qualms about it.

So where should it start?

At this point, i wouldnt be surprised that this is one of those story that attempt to look as something as a mass marketed, generic product that follows trend and fashion yet turned out to be somewhat deconstruct those things they wanted to imitate.

3-4 years ago though, it would blow my younger mind, and honestly if i watched it then I wouldn't understand that final episode, i am glad I discovered this later in this stage of my life, wiser and pretty much starting to cement my worldview for better or worse.

Over the course of time I have seen many attempt of different medium, different genre and people trying to do stuff like this, but i can say it is one of the most well done attempt, done with wit and respect to the consumer's intelligence.

Now to the plot itself, my god i love what they do to the universe. Sailor moon and cardcaptor sakura was one of my biggest part of childhood.

As a sick adult i just love how they totally gutted the inside of the genre, and with its entrails, sew a beautiful dress for the victim to wear. Grotesque, but beautiful.

It is a world where magical girl arent this ultra cute superheroes is minikirts vanquishing evil. It is a world where magical girls are cows, to be fattened, and slaugthered when times come so its meat can be eaten by the dying universe itself.

Over the story we learn that homura kept rewinding time, that it fundamentally changes the thread binding fate itself. She unknowingly, made madoka the most important person in the universe, enough that power can basically turn her into a god.

Madoka found out, used her power to literally create a better world. Literally. She invented law of the wheel where soul stones just disappear when it is corrupted.

Instead of fighting witches, the magical girl just fight an incarnation of negative emotions that human created, and compress them into those black pills kyubei eat in the end.

It os no longer a wheel of hope of despair, but more like SMT/persona deal where the demons are just facets of human and life in general that take form and cause harm when they interact with people.

In a sense, madoka changed the game rule that makes sacrifice of magical girls become unnecessary, while having a way for the incubator to fight entropy.

I can argue why didnt madoka just create a world without entropy or simply with other more convenient source of energy, but I believe it can be explained with 2 things:

1. Entropy is simply a hard coded rule of existence itself, and not even a god can stop it directly, just finding a loophole around it.

2. She didnt want to create too much changes in history. If what kyubei is, true, to make history as it is, humanity need the incubator to help them evolve and conquer the world. I guess that fact isnt really changeable either.

In the end the new world while not perfect, is much better alternative that the old one.

Some other personal qualms is, i think they should have made madoka really really disappear in the new universe. I kinda got disappointed that homura just conveniently remember the other timeline even though they kinda have the excuse because of her time hopping abilities.

Maybe i am just a heartless monster with an endless void in where my heart should be, but i feel like they actually diminish the weight and consequences of madoka's action when they allow some space for a little happiness in the ending.
