clearly both, they were recorded in a different enough frequency range that listening in a noisy environment (or depending on your hearing) might mask one or the other.

This. Try explaining it to the average person though and they won't get it.

Uhh... like most cell phones?

We just tried this on 3 different phones and nobody could hear "Laurel" at all until we watched some of the videos where the pitch was shifted.

I heard a high pitched yanny in my car earlier and now I hear a low laurel

Both, Yanny in a middle-high pitch on the left speaker and Laurel in a very low pitch with lots of echo on the right speaker.

The thing is in this video, the clip he opens in Audacity sounds different than the sound he plays earlier. He's already edited it by normalizing.

With decent speakers you're going to hear more of the lower frequencies.
On a cell phone you're mainly going to hear the higher frequencies.

I don't think the speakers matter. I hear yanny, with no hint of laurel. My fiancee, whom I just asked "what does this say" said laurel immediately.

That was last night. Just played the same clip on the same phone, and I hear laurel now lol.
