You can safely ignore the "mob conspiracy" part of the article if you wish.

The Environmental Protection Agency will not consider the health risks and impacts of asbestos already in the environment when evaluating the dangers associated with the chemical compound, Scott Pruitt, the agency's head, quietly announced last week. That means asbestos used in tiles, piping and adhesives throughout homes and businesses in the United States will remain largely unchecked and unaccounted for. Nearly 15,000 Americans die each year from asbestos-related diseases, but President Donald Trump has called the substance "100 percent safe, once applied."

As a safety consultant, well, I'd be appalled, but frankly I'm well past appalled with this EPA at this point.

I can give you the big laundry list of substances I inspect routinely, asbestos included. BeO is just one more brick in the wall.

And the reason I routinely inspect asbestos in places I work is to ensure it's not being disturbed.

Asbestos is the GOAT building material, if it's left undisturbed.

Of course, once disturbed and airborne, that's the risk.

Black mould is potentially more dangerous than asbestos.

I work in building insurance and deal with asbestos and mould a lot.

The overreaction about asbestos and lead paint are practically comical.
In both cases if it's there. Old tile, old insulation, under 4 layers of paint, etc. Leave it there. It's literally not any sort of threat to anyone. Leave it be unless you're going to do remodeling or tearing the house down. But people act like oh no, it just being there is a threat to you family's lives. You have to spend thousands having it removed asap while everyone doing so dresses like they're dealing with a nuclear reactor. And people buy into it.

This.

If you have an asbestos roof, or ceiling, and it's undisturbed and just sitting there. LEAVE IT ALONE.

If your kid puts a hole in it, then yeah get it removed.

It's still a hazardous material. It needs to be monitored to make sure it's not being disturbed. That's what inspections are for. If the EPA says they're not going to bother with that, then what's to motivate anyone else?

This is the trial of the safety professional. Dealing with people who see a situation that's not harming them right now and reaching the conclusion that under no circumstances will it ever be harmful.

I disagree. Saying "there's no great need to remove asbestos right now" is valid. It's expensive, and as was said, if you're not disturbing it, much of the current asbestos still in use remains benign.

BUT... you still have to keep an eye on it. You don't get to not check on a known risk simply because it's not killing people the same way it used to be.

And my point is this "quiet" missive from the EPA, rather than being at the forefront of an announcement that they've got data proving the danger has passed, leaves me a little skeptical the actual science on this was done.
