It's required by law to separate the child from parent when they're arrested for crossing the border illegally. That law was set BEFORE Trump

What is your suggestion? That we not arrest those people? That we just send a message to the entire world that we're not enforcing our immigration laws at all?

Like honestly some of you people don't think, you just feel

The law was made before Trump.

And again you don't know what you're talking about. If you claim asylum they need to be separated from the parents for even longer, by Pre-Trump law. Stop spreading leftist propaganda.

In 2008, President George W. Bush focused on the problem of minors crossing the border without their parents and signed a law unanimously passed by Congress that called for such "unaccompanied minors" to be released into the "least restrictive setting."

By 2014, President Barack Obama was facing an influx of both children traveling alone and families as a result of violence in Central America. At one point, his administration tried housing the families in special detention centers. But after a federal judge in California ruled the arrangement violated a long-standing agreement barring kids from jail-like settings, even with their parents, the government began releasing families in to the U.S. pending notification of their next court date.

Fast forward to Trump, who campaigned on building a border wall, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who derided these longtime U.S. immigration practices as "catch and release." Trump and Sessions insisted that people exploit the system, even traveling with children to ensure they aren't jailed and slipping away before their court dates.

SO DID U.S. POLICY CHANGE OR NOT?

Yes. While Trump's new immigration policy doesn't call for families to be separated, as pointed out by Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, the policy makes separations inevitable.

Following Trump's election, then-Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly now Trump's White House chief of staff floated the idea of separating families as a way to discourage illegal border crossings. But much of the administration's focus went into a travel ban aimed at Muslim-majority nations.

By this April, Sessions announced a plan: The U.S. would have "zero tolerance" for illegal crossings. If a person doesn't arrive at an appropriate port of entry to claim asylum, the crossing is deemed illegal and prosecuted even if the person does not have a criminal history. With the adult detained and facing prosecution, any minors accompanying them are taken away.

Every time I post this the other person runs away. Let's see if TC sticks around this time.

There were occasional instances of families being separated in the past, but nowhere near 2,000+ kids in 2 months like we have now. But you already know that.

What do I want?

I want an immigration system that works.

I want seeking asylum to not be considered as precedence for separating families and shipping the children halfway across the country from their parents, with no guarantee that they'll ever see each other again.

I want a greater amount of people working in immigration who speak Spanish, *especially* those that deal with children.

I want work plans with a path to citizenship that processes in a year, executed speedily and efficiently.

I want money and resources pushed towards this system that clearly is lacking.

I want representatives who understand and empathize with the plight of people fleeing from fear in their native countries. I want them treated as human beings rather than potential threats. I want information spread to the populace about the real facts behind this situation, rather than fearmongering. I want this multiple decades long block of politicking on the subject of immigration to come to an end, or at least a comfortable middle.

I want the President to remove this policy of separating families for the "crime" of wanting to enter this country. He has the power to do so easily, yet he claims he's hamstrung by the Democrats, a party that's not in power in any branch of the government.

I want a lot of things.

And I want some iced tea.

It seems like the solution is to let families stay together in buildings before their court times so they don't run away... they don't necessarily have to be "jail-like settings"

I agree with you mostly Cyric, but it is a crime to enter this country illegally. I assume you don't want open borders. If we had open borders, billions of people would try to go to the US. Maybe that's an exaggeration, but we would quickly become the most populated country in the world.

Our infrastructure, both tangibly and intangibly, can't handle that. And if we make an exception for some illegal immigrants, we would have to make an exception for all illegal immigrants.

We should definitely have an immigration system that processes decisiions quickly and efficiently. But people who are denied are still denied.

People who go to a designated entry port and claim asylum are having no issues. People who sneak in illegally, get caught and then go "oh wait! Lolz. I'm actually seeking asylum." are being detained as they should be.

Nope. Those who have legitimate claims of asylum are being granted asylum. Those who don't are being sent back.

The problem is that a lot of people are trying to circumvent the process. Or just sneak in since they know they don't have a legitimate claim of asylum.

An agent who does something like that should be retrained so that they understand how to follow the proper protocol. It's still doesn't make it okay for people to enter illegaly. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Cool, so who's paying for all that stuff you want?

I'm sure there's quite a few Americans that have lived their entire life here, contributed to our society, that would be plenty happy with what these kids have. I'm sure theres quite a few kids in america that have been taken or seperated from their parents that would love what those kids have now.

And we want these kids of criminals, that very well knew what could happen to their kids, to live some pampered life?

Hopefully the next generation will care about their country, kinda crazy how we ignore all of our own.
