Konami had this series called Magician's Quest that was REALLY heavily animal crossing inspired, and you could date your neighbors. You could actually date multiple ones at once and they could be the same gender. It was super fun tbh, I wish more people played it.

I don't understand the appeal of that game

Stardew Valley, yep, I can get behind that. Harvest Moon? Sure! But what's the point in Animal Crossing? The town is so damn small and there is nothing to do. At least the one I played

The appeal is that it's supposed to be like a living virtual world you communicate with and through, hence the use of real time clock, but the issue is after the proof-of-concept on the N64/GC they've never really advanced the "communication" aspects besides simultaneous multiplayer with Wild World, instead choosing to focus on the customization aspects. NPC interactions have barely grown since the GC if at all, in some ways it's regressed, and no effort has been put into making the game world itself feel more alive.

here's a quote from another thread about the background of the series

the original premise was it was going to be a multiplayer RPG for the 64DD with a focus on communication, where you would have to learn the daily, real time routines of NPCs and converse with them to convince them to help you overcome various obstacles with dungeons and bosses, plus working all that in with the schedules of you and other players, and the more life sim esque stuff was present as a smaller part of the game

when the 64DD went through dev hell and ultimately flopped, and the game got moved to the 64, they had to cut a ton of shit because their space for save data was suddenly cut from the many MB one of the 64DD's 64MB rewritable disks would provide to a mere 64KB from the cart's SRAM, so ultimately they dropped all the combat, dungeon, story, and multiplayer aspects and just capitalized on the life sim elements making it a game where you can kinda do whatever in this game world filled with cute animal people to communicate with "where something's always happening, whether you're there or not"

and then besides re-incorporating simultaneous multiplayer in Wild World as the tech became available to make it happen, the "communication" has never really grown much beyond what the original and its re-releases, no effort has been put into making the game world feel alive like they wanted to do with the RTC features, and it's all frustrating
