Very surprising for a liberal show. She actually calls out several media that makes male rape jokes and treat male victims like jokes.

Actually, societal victim-blaming of male rape victims comes up a lot when we discuss America's rape culture, and the toxic interpretations of masculinity that we've all internalized that contributes to our lack of sympathy for male rape survivors.

It's always great when more people join the conversation.

I'm glad this is starting to enter the public consciousness, it's honestly disgusting how our culture treats male victims

I mean, this was a tangent in a John Oliver segment about prison last year (correction: 2014, oh God).

Why is this suddenly something to outrage about tho? Rape jokes about prison are a dime a dozen, I heard several about Manafort yesterday, side note, he really is manafucked, even if Trump pardons him he's still facing state charges and a wave of evidence

Couldn't tell you. I'm not in the business of deciding what is and isn't funny to people.

Good. It was great to hear Terry Crews join the MeToo movement and its even better when non-victims go out of their way to support victims and raise awareness.

Can't view the video right now. Are people talking just about male on male sexual abuse or are they including female on male abuse too?

I was a victim of what if it had been a male with a real penis would be rape and it's really messed me up.

Ehhh just the former. As expected. Pointing out that women can also be guilty of sex crimes is not a popular hot button for most western media icons to tap because it can cost them substantial viewers with the perception that acknowledging male victims threatens the validity of female victims. I was actually kind of surprised to see Samantha Bee touch on male victims at all. That takes guts considering the majority of her viewer base...

To be fair, the showcased topic is male SEXUAL abuse. Not domestic abuse (where the western numbers are much closer to even). And while it is possible for a woman to sexually assault or rape a man, you're going to have a hard time convincing most of the public of that partly because rapists are far more likely to be male than female. In many cases it can already be a challenge for female rape victims to be believed by the justice system. Good luck trying to convince authorities and courts who still cling to the Duluth Model that a man can be sexually victimized by a woman too. When archaic district laws are left written in a way that specifically mention a penis as a requirement to be the perpetrator in male vs female abuse, you know you ain't gonna get much sympathy as a male victim in that area.

Plus you have common gender stereotypes eliminating empathy towards male victims. The idea that all teen boys and men are constantly thirsty for any convenient sexual activity implies that they can't ever be real victims of sex crimes. The stereotypes lead the public to presume that male victims in general are basically nymphomaniacs that just eventually accept spontaneous sexual abuse as unexpected masochistic pleasure. It perpetuates a very grim presumption that male victims can't ever be traumatized by sexual abuse because the stereotypes imply that any sexual experience, even unpleasant or uninvited, is just another rite of passage for boys and men...

He used the N-word. And as everyone knows, a white man saying the n-word is the equivalent of killing puppies.

The emotional (and physical) impact of rape or sexual abuse has on someone is not suddenly less impactful simply because the victim is a male.

has to do with the gender roles we associate with men, which have changed very little in the past century, despite a dramatic change in the roles we associate with women.

there's been a lot of chaos from that. hypocrisy in how we treat male victims is just one facet of it. the widespread phenomena of men being somewhat unsure what to do with themselves now that women are their own providers and that role of theirs is conditioned into them but not productive in achieving their own life goals is another.

probably the biggest one, though, is the emphasis in which we socialize men to primarily bond with their romantic partners. it has led to an entire generation of adult men with no close friends other than their spouse. in the event of divorce, these men have a very rough time.

I don't know.

But it sure as hell helps to have hobbies. Male bonding is all about shared activities, so doing something you enjoy with your friends on a regular basis really helps.
