I was closer to him in my younger days. Really who I was close to was my cousins, his sons. We'd do a once-a-year hangout at their house where I'd stay over and play video games to the wee hours. In the last ten or so years, we weren't all that close.

He was a good man. Great with his hands. Very crafty. We've still got some of his wooden toys that he made for us when we were kids, and some that were made for my nieces.

Unfortunately, he didn't really take very good care of his health. His wife, my aunt, is in rather poor health, so I think the focus was on maintaining her health rather than his own, so a few months ago when he hurt his back shovelling snow and they found malignant tumors that had metastasized, he paid the price on not monitoring his own health. Then a week ago they were treating that and he had a heart attack, so that's when they knew it was getting close.

My cousins are fully grown with families of their own, so they're taken care of, but I don't know what's going to become of my aunt. Assisted living, I imagine. Quite frankly I kinda figured she'd be the first to go.

Of course, now this is the first of my parents generation to go, so now my folks and aunts and uncles are all gonna be staring their fate down.
