I feel like I would've been more sad at the ending if I wasn't so mad at the brother. Yeah the aunt was kind of a bitch but he really didn't do much for them or help around the house. Hell, when he got the cooking supplies and cooked for him and his sister, he still left the dishes for the aunt which was pretty rude.

Also, the old dude literally told him to swallow his pride and go back to the aunt and apologize. Instead he held on to his pride and let his sister wither away.

Sad fate for the girl and a good message for how fucked up war can be but man were my peas steamed.

Read about the author and the novel as well as his statements regarding why he wrote it.

Only if you wanna get punched in the gut though.

I just might. Ive kinda been on a sad binge ever since I watched Flavors of Youth so this movie kinda disappointed me a bit in that regard. I still enjoyed it though.

Ya I know that you mean here.

As for the background the two biggest things are:

"Grave of the Fireflies ( Hotaru no Haka) is a 1967 semi-autobiographical short story by Japanese author Akiyuki Nosaka. It is based on his experiences before, during, and after the firebombing of Kobe in 1945. One of his sisters died as the result of a sickness, his adoptive father died during the firebombing proper, and his younger adoptive sister Keiko died of malnutrition in Fukui. It was written as a personal apology to Keiko, regarding her death."

Why he wrote it

And the second is his statement about right after she died:

"My sister's death is an exact match with the novel. It was one week after the end of the war. At the countryside of Fukui prefecture where I was, it was the day the restrictions on lighting were removed. It must have been the 22nd. It was evening, and I was picking up my sister's bones. I was coming home in a daze when I saw the village lit up. There was nothing like my surprise then. My sister died in my side of the world, and the light was coming back in the other."

There's more information out there but that should give you an idea of what kind of shit that mans gone through.

Yeah. Pretty sad that that had to happen just as the war was over so you can't even enjoy the return of light to Japan.

Part of Grave of the Fireflies is to also highlight Japan's hubris during the war. Their refusal to accept help or admit wrong doing cost them too much
