The IGN article kept referencing, Nova as a person. Nova as a corps. Individual ranks of the Nova Corps and Nova Prime as the ultimate Nova Corps member.

Which comes back to... Who exactly is Nova just another member of the Nova Corps as in nothing special when all is said and done about him?

Relate to the MCU and the use of the Nova Corps in the defense of Xandar to make sense of it because they just seemed to pilot ships together and not be super heroes.

Nova is special, generally depicted as the best of the Nova Corps members.

As for your second question, Xandar doesn't exist sometimes and Nova himself is sometimes the only Nova. Nova at his best is pretty much a Kyle Rayner - running around as the torchbearer and last Nova. I always think of Annihilation as the best place to start with Marvel space stuff and following the titles like Nova that spin out of it.

Okay so he is pretty strong. And the MCU stuff seems like a moreso a homeage to it than to actually follow it as per the comics.

I guess last question, where does Nova stand strength-wise in comparison to say Thanos and Thor and such.

Nova would get stomped by Thanos and give Thor a tussle before losing. I would put him on a level of superhero we really don't have in the MCU, which is lower cosmic. He's on a level below guys like Silver Surfer and Adam Warlock, but he still would crush most of the Avengers if he had the opportunity. Like, give him a shot and he would solo the threat in Avengers 1.

It's also worth noting that I think Scarlet is talking about the adult Nova, the one everyone is used to and loves, as opposed to the child Nova that is much less well received and, I believe, is much weaker than the adult one.
