This is the one Mandela Effect-type thing that gets me. I absolutely was taught about a silent n in the word when I was a kid. My brain even interpreted it as "dilemna" when I saw the word in print.

More likely you just conflated it with various other words spelled with a silent n after an m.

I mean, I know there is no N in the word, but there are plenty of English words that don't follow its own phonetic rules.

I just tried saying dilemma out loud like seven times and there was no way I could get it to work with an N in it.

I mean, I know there is no N in the word, but there are plenty of English words that don't follow its own phonetic rules.

There are none with a silent n followed by a vowel (except with suffixes like -ed).

And in words with the mn where the n is silent, it becomes pronounced in different forms of the word. For instance, "damnable".
