I think you're missing the point if you're expecting a traditional fighting game. It's heavy on the fanservice like DoA is (was?), but it's very much an entry-level fg, which DoA doesn't cater for.

That doesn't make it a great game of course, or excuse it's lack of single player content outside of character customisation, but it doesn't deserve to be written off for being so simplified compared to Street Fighter when that isn't the angle it's going for.

You can make a game that is easy to pick up still have a lot of depth. I'm not sure the idea of an entry level fighter makes much sense as anything but an excuse. There aren't much any fighters I would say are as good as Street Fighter V while being less complex than it.

There are a good many I would say are as good as Street Fighter V while appearing less complex to pick up and play at first glance, though. In fact most SNK games I would say this applies to.

(Note I haven't actually played SNK Heroines. Just didn't like the idea that you have to have a simplistic kinda game to make it easy to pick up and play)

It's not really meant to be a traditional fighter. It basically plays like a hybrid of Smash and fighting games.

You have life bars, but draining them doesn't win you the match. You have to drain them to a certain point, then hit a Finisher-esque move to win. And it sorta controls like Smash, in that you have a basic attack button, and then you have a special attack button and each character has like, 4ish special attacks depending on the direction you hold. And then throws, I think.

And then it also has items.

It's... Fine for what it is, but you shouldn't go in expecting much at all.
