The intricate, highly detailed environments; being able to speak to pretty much every character; the relationships between the characters; the realistic following of clues, like a detective; the changing time of day; exploring the docks, which was quite a lot bigger than the other area; collecting the toys; playing the arcade games; how realistic stuff was; how you had the house at the top of the hill, surrounded by a village, then the town down below.

It was so enjoyable to play, despite the fact you mostly wandered around and spoke to people, and there wasn't much real gameplay. I never did get all the toys, although I got a lot. You could see how great the graphics were, and the attention to detail.

Ironically, I didn't think Shenmue 2 was that good. I played for a few hours, and then stopped. I'm not actually sure what was wrong with it, but I didn't like it much.

Shenmue was way more linear than they acted like it would be, the voice acting was hilariously bad and we all put up with it because Quick Time Events were a new thing that we weren't sick of yet.

Shenmue 2 was kinda lazy. The whole thing was in Japanese with English subs. Do you know what one magazine said? It was good, because you were in China, and it might things seem foreign and alien. That was actually ODM that said that, and they were a great magazine...but I guess they wanted to get a few last sales of Dreamcast games for Sega. But shilling is a bad thing.

When everyone who bought the system would have to buy it twice for the game to break even....then you fucked up pretty badly.

I'm just saying, to call something that was at the time ridiculously expensive to develop the poor man's version of a game with a reasonable budget is backwards. Literally.

Even if it made a loss, that doesn't matter much. Some games are designed to get people to buy the system, which is a good long-term strategy.

They're right, and it applies to foreign films with subtitles as well. The "exotic" voices add to the unfamiliar setting of the story and people. Sure it was lazy that they didn't do an english dub, but enjoying it in its original language is valid. I personally turned the english dub off for Shenmue.
