I'd say something like this...

1. When it was individual states, like Prussia (I know Germany didn't actually exist yet, but you get the idea)
2. The German Republic.
3. Nazi era.
4. Between the Nazi era and the split (when the country was basically rubble, and very dirty people).
5. East / West Germany.
6. Modern Germany, after Reunification.

Is this an accurate way of looking at it, do you think? Arguably, though, 4 isn't really a phase, because it was so short-lived. I suppose it could be lumped together with 3, although NSDAP (the Nazi Party) was officially disbanded in late 45 (which was a good thing, obviously).

It's funny, in a way. Germany is actually one of the newest countries in Europe, only about 130 years old, unlike Britain, Spain, France, Switzerland, etc, which are generally hundreds of years old.

But...it was just part of a much large country. I think of the Holy Roman Empire and Holy Empire as countries, and the different "parts" were like American states, of modern British counties.
