Britains biggest employer organisation and main trade union body have sounded the alarm over the prospect of British companies implanting staff with microchips to improve security.

UK firm BioTeq, which offers the implants to businesses and individuals, has already fitted 150 implants in the UK.

The tiny chips, implanted in the flesh between the thumb and forefinger, are similar to those for pets. They enable people to open their front door, access their office or start their car with a wave of their hand, and can also store medical data.

Another company, Biohax of Sweden, also provides human chip implants the size of a grain of rice. It told the Sunday Telegraph () that it is in discussions with several British legal and financial firms about fitting their employees with microchips, including one major company with hundreds of thousands of employees.

The CBI, which represents 190,000 UK businesses, voiced concerns about the prospect.

A CBI spokesperson said: While technology is changing the way we work, this makes for distinctly uncomfortable reading. Firms should be concentrating on rather more immediate priorities and focusing on engaging their employees.

Even if it's "voluntary", they probably define that very loosely. It could mean anything short of being held down and forcibly injected. There are many ways that people could be pressured into it, with it still ultimately being "voluntary".

Yeah this was also my thought. I also have heard of this practice in the past and it was mainly done with high level employees- meaning those of high value and importance to the company. I could see how certain promotions and opportunities may not be available to some employees moving up the ladder if they were to refuse this kind of thing within the organizations that have adopted it.

Look up how employers have a history of getting caught spying on their employees. Whether it's a GPS on the company car tracking the locations they visit, using Internet search history to invade their privacy, or straight up using spyware on laptop cameras to see their employees naked.

I find it annoying how people jump to conclusions, most of the higher ups don't give a shit about your personal stuff. My boss just talked about trying to get employee's smartphones secure, with a 4 digit passcode and a app to lock or wipe the phone if lost. The attorneys all freaked out saying we are going to by spying on them. When all we are trying to do is keep their data safe, and if they lose their phones, don't get into trouble with hipaa or whatever if data leaks.
