The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday it would seek a nationwide ban on menthol cigarettes, putting the tobacco industry into an all-too-familiar spot: having to defend the minty smokes, which are popular among younger smokers and African-Americans.

I'm a Red man myself, Marlboro, Newports, whatever the brand I like em red.....but even I buy a menthol pack every now and then

They're like dessert smokes, not always necessary, but nice once in a while

Marlboro Reds are my favorite, but I buy special blend usually because it's a couple bucks cheaper for two packs. The cigarette tax in California is a real bitch.

I can kind of understand a ban simply because cigarettes will still be available in traditional flavors that are not appealing to children.

Its not the same as making the use of tobacco illegal entirely, seems very misrepresentative to characterize the move like that.

You never hear about contraband strawberry cigarettes or anything, I mean is this going to create an underground market for the flavor? I think looking at other banned flavors would be a good indicator of what will happen.

I think they're finding out that vaping is just as bad, if not worse, than actual cigarettes.

It's not (so far). They just don't want kids being lab rats because more research is needed.

Exactly. To say we aren't allowed to do drugs is to say we don't own our own bodies.

Nobody is saying we shouldn't make people responsible for their actions. You kill somebody? You go to prison. I don't care if you're on drugs or not, that makes no difference.

Some guy smoking meth in his house and binging out on video games all night doesn't deserve to go to jail just because it's not healthy for him.

Too many of you so thoughtlessly throw around "cigs are bad, no benefit, ban it" like that's a good suggestion. You know what drug kills every day in a much slower and socially accepted way? Refined sugars, processed foods, over-consumption of carbs that cause inflammation. Food is a drug and we don't ban all the shit that's out there that our bodies were never designed to ingest in such large quantities. And I don't think that we should ban it. Just as we shouldn't ban drugs and criminalize users of drugs. What we need is a reform in education and social education. We need people to give a shit about these things to where we invite intelligent discourse so that people can make educated decisions, and society as a whole can view certain substances in a different light. Let the people who have problems have their drugs. But integrate a system that tackles this issue with rehabilitation and reform, and educate the masses in the pursuit of truth. Prohibition causes nothing but trouble and we've learned this time and time again. Educate the masses so the majority view whatever substance in a sort of light that causes them not to even desire to use it. Of course there will be a percentage of people who will abuse a drug, there always is. Banning substances only increases the percentage of abusers and puts power in the black market, and allows corruption to sweep industries (big pharma for example).

^ I think the point of education would be so that people can make conscious decisions. Even when people know all the facts, many will still choose to smoke cigarettes or do drugs or eat unhealthy foods. And I'm totally okay with that. You have to balance quality of life with quantity of life.

Better not. Canada already did so I have to go to Washington to get menthols, its a pain in the ass.
