I mean, I tip 15% at restaurants pretty much guaranteed unless out of the ordinary service one way or the other, but I see a lot of waitress friends complain about their tips online and how people should tip them more.

However, on the other hand most waitresses do not report their tips or the vast majority of their tips for tax purposes anyways?

Isn't this hypocritical?

First of all "vast majority" of tipping going unreported is a massive overstatement. The "vast majority" of tips are going to be on credit card, which goes directly to the company's system and get accounted for immediately. Cash tips are increasingly rare.

Second of all, I don't see what's hypocritical. You can say it's wrong to not report cash tips but it's an entirely unrelated complaint from wanting to be tipped more.

They want people to be generous and give more while they are not giving what they are supposed to the government to pitch in towards society. I think it is quite clear how it would be.

That said, it is true that credit card systems are gaining a lot of steam.

Your views on taxation are unrelated to thinking that your labor is being undervalued. Service staff are paid directly by the customer for the service. What if the waiter doesn't support taxation at all? There'd be no contradiction. If the waitress does support taxation, it's hypocritical but for other reasons.

Millionaire hires accountant specifically to find out how to shift his finances around to pay as little tax as possible.

Right-wing response: He's just playin' by the rules of the game, good on him.

Waitress might possibly underreport a tiny amount of money she earns as cash tips.

Right-wing response: What a hypocrite, this sounds like a problem we should crack down on.

82.5% of waiters + bartenders work in states that allow establishments to pay workers less than the state minimum wage

83.8% of restaurants have violated some sort of labour law (working off the clock, unpaid overtime, tip infractions, refusal to settle back pay).

spending even a moment considering the supposed hypocrisy of undervalued workers shows you care more about catching them in a logical trick than their material concerns

Yeah. In texas you usually get paid like 2.30 or so an hour as a waitress or bartender I believe.

I am comparing getting what you feel you deserve to giving what is actually deserved.

Seems hypocritical to want it when getting but not when giving while criticizing others for not giving what they personally feel they deserve.

It's only hypocritical if you believe the government deserves what they ask from you. If you don't then it's simply saying that the government asks for more than their value and you receive less than your value. Nothing hypocritical there whatsoever.

I'm not one of those no taxes ever edgelords but I certainly don't get the value of the money I put into the government because the government doesn't intelligently spend money. If I had the option to go cheap on the tip easily with the government you bet I would.

even in this narrow, simple-minded worldview where the only thing that matters is virtue and taxes, you would think when the department of labour reveals that 83.8% of restaurants are committing some form of wage theft that the resulting thought would be "we need to cut down on corporate wage theft so we can recapture those taxes" and not "those darn hypocritical workers"

This doesn't have much to do with what the government is worth and whether your taxes are worth it.

The main issue is... Do you think waitresses are kind of hypocritical when they complain that their customers do not tip them what they feel they deserve while many also do not report their tips fully to give the government what they are supposed to.

The waitress feels they deserve more because the value of their service rendered is more than what they're paid not because it's "the law." They think the government is overpaid because they're not getting the value of what they put into it.

I guess you would be a hypocrite if you were a waitress who did this but most people don't think like you but still maintain a consistent viewpoint on this. It's just not yours.

If you do everything right, are attentive to the customers needs, make sure they never have to wait on refills or anything else and everything is 100% perfect and then they tip like 2 bucks on a 60+ dollar bill or not even at all, do you not get angry and feel like you deserved a bit more?

You have to go well above and beyond to get tipped well in the restaurant business. There are some that do not go above and their tips reflect that but then you get those that go above and beyond and get shafted by shitty customers who cant award good service.

It is not hypocritical to say that some entities "deserve" more money while others do not.

You could be wrong about whether or not either half of that is true, but from a logical standpoint there's nothing inconsistent with the statement "I deserve more money, and the government does not deserve more money."

"you are deflecting" is a weird way to acknowledge a response to your specific complaint

you think tipped workers are hypocritical for taking money under the table because "they want more" and yet as this money is under the table, it's not subjected to taxes. you are concerned with norms being followed and taxes being collected.

the united states department of labour says that 83.8% or restaurants commit wage theft. this means the vast majority of workers are not collecting what they are owed and therefor not paying taxes, which seems to be your primary concern. it also means that the vast majority of businesses are committing a crime, which is a wrong you believe needs to be corrected.

"please read the topic" you don't even have any actual thought here, you're just complaining for the sake of it.

Actually, I do not have an issue with anyone at all. I saw the thing about people reporting premium snapchat girls for not reporting tips, and I was thinking about tips in general and how I see people complain a lot on Facebook specifically about not being tipped enough while I also know most people don't report tips if they don't have to.

And, I thought hmmm that would be a good topic for discussion.

A solution to what

You just created the exact same scenario from post 1 with just them making more in base pay. Tipping is alrdy optional and at their own discretion mostly. Most tips that can be not claimed for taxes are not claimed.
