All these companies are shuttering tons of models because everyone is buying SUVs and trucks.

Why does everyone suddenly need these big ass vehicles? Does everyone suddenly have money to burn on gas? Does the majority think climate change is a myth? What is going on?

I was so excited when Ford brought the Focus RS stateside, and now just like that it's gone again.

Cheap deathtraps no longer exist.
Thus, your options are to pay too much for a tiny car, pay a slightly larger way too much for a crossover, or pay way way too much for a bigass truck you don't really need.

crossovers are so much more convenient & practical than sedans. better for hauling shit, better for families, more comfortable ride, better in bad weather (only AWD cars i can think of in the non-luxury sector are Subarus).

the only concession you are making is MPG, and honestly it's not even a big deal. a honda civic gets 32mpg, a CR-V gets 27. big deal.

When they're talking about SUVs, they're also talking about compact crossovers like the CR-V and RAV4. They're shorter than sedans and over more space overall.

People are buying less cars because they're more reliable than before and they don't break down often. Millennials also don't drive as much as Gen X.

They're also getting smart about what cars they want to buy. People want hatches. Try fitting a big box into a sedan... almost impossible. Crossovers offers more headroom, and trunk space and they're a lot better for baby seats if the buyer is planning a family. And with the crazy MPG of the 2019 RAV4 hybrid, I don't see many good reason to buy a sedan these days.

I mean, some people need a bigger car because they have a family.

Besides (and I know this wasn't the point, but still) most of the people I've talked to about "smart cars" have the same opinion I do: I wouldn't drive one of those unless they were the only car on the road. If there's an accident, you can kiss your ass goodbye. You'd be crushed in your environmentally sound car by a regular car, and that's not even considering the fact that you can't fit anybody else in there with you.

It's possible that people feel that same way about "regular" cars. Personally, I just like to be able to see the road in front of me and not have my view blocked too much by a larger vehicle. I drive an SUV.

I wouldn't trust a turbo 4 in a truck application. If I were getting a "small" truck, I'd get a Taco or a new Ridgeline.

Trends?

I also think that people in general are buying fewer cars due to increasing concerns with pollution, better transport infrastructure, and more availability of alternative options. However, the group that normally buys SUVs and Trucks (such as people living in rural areas) may not have the same concerns.

Cool.

I was driving a 1994 Explorer up until 2015.

Then had a 2002 Taurus and now a 2007 Optima.

Miss my old ass Explorer though.

That was like my pet for 15 years.

i dont really get caught up in all that specification mumbo jumbo. if i can get a reliable truck with good mpg im good.

The turbo 4 specification is why the truck won't get good MPG or be reliable. For it to do work beyond passenger duty, it will have to stay in boost almost all the time. That's actually the engine that was in the Focus RS and is currently in the Mustang Ecoboost.
