You bring this up during Christmas when you know people make alot of tamales this time of year. Right now, give me some tamales with some salsa and I'm good, any other time of the year though enchiladas rule.

tamales for xmas carnal

I had a Mexican friend (actual Mexican) and he got mad as fuck when I said Mexicans eat tamales for Xmas.

Apparently Mexicans from Mexico actually eat turkey and that sort of stuff in Christmas, while the cholo types in the US eat the tamales.

My friend told me that it is actually like if Americans living in China ate Big Macs for thanksgiving instead of turkey

My dad lives and is from Mexico, but he's not actually a real Mexican cause someone you know said he wasn't because......of food.

Seriously? Your friend sounds like he is a self hating mexican who thinks other latinos are less classy for eating tamales.

He loves tamales. The topic came up while we were eating tamales LOL.

I can understand him, imagine there were a bunch of Americans born in China (China born from US parents) who have never set foot in America and tell the Chinese we Americans eat Big Macs and scrapple for thanksgiving, wouldnt you be like no, Americans dont?

If its top tier of both tamales wins hands down

But not that many people make top tier tamales anymore it seems

lol

Let me take a whack at this

His mexican friend isn't implying the cholos are better or worse, I'm mexican btw, born and raised.

From my own experience, what I can tell you presently is that it's clearly a different experience when speaking about mexican-americans (mexican heritage living in the us) and mexican (born and raised).

The impression and / or idea you get in the us about mexicans is a little misleading, because you're mostly encountering mexican-americans.

From the interactions I've had with them 99% of the time I clearly see the same socio-economic level (which says more about me and where I like to go than about them).

By now they have their own thing regarding their integration into american society and culture, which further distances their identity from that of mexicans (born and raised). For instance, when you see them represented in entertainment (think gabriel iglesias, george lopez, cheech-chong, etc), they somehow communicate that mexican "thing", and they are funny people, but not that much if you're a mexican (born and raised) because you don't fully connect (unless you get both culture's references, us and mexico, like me)

But he's right, at least on the northern part of mexico, for Christmas we eat:

Turkey
Tamales (yes, that too)
Champurrado
Buuelos
Menudo

Anyway I guess they tend to celebrate and highlight more mexican things than we do since they're actually away from their original country. Also add that their problems are different than our problems.

The analogy doesn't work. Big Macs are corporate food. Tamales are traditional.

It works in the sense that theyre a typical food of a culture, yet not something that is truly eaten daily or the like and certainly not a Xmas food

Imagine I said home made hamburger instead of Big Mac

That's akin to describing the difference between Lasagna Bolognese, Stuffed Rigatoni, Italian Pasta Salad, Chicken Alfredo, they're all Italian dished made with pasta.

So... I guess the difference is what you stuff the tortilla with? I mean, I guess they're all the same concept and those naming differences is just to identify which type you wan't.

Never gave it much thought though.

I like your analogy. Spaghetti is a long noodle while penne is short and thicker and hollow, for example.

It might be an Mexican-American thing but its not a "cholo type" mexican thing. Living in San Diego a lot of mexicans eat tamales on Christmas. Regardless of their standing. Like if i go to work people will just come up to you offering to sell them because they are so popular around this time
