...and I've actually played through them, but I guess I missed the purple gems somewhere. Aren't these things usually easy to find? They're just lying along the main path of any given level?

I might have another bash soon. I've done maybe 2 of the 5 last levels (I assume they're the last), but those gems are annoying.
