It emcompasses all the great things that the golden era of JRPGs had to offer. A gripping story (albeit rushed during the second part), good combat, amazing characters, FREAKING GIANT ROBOTS and overall a very nice art style.

I don't think it's the best ever (That would be Suikoden II even with all its bugs), but it's certainly a top 5 JRPG for me.

I've played through most PS1 JRPGs but I had a real hard time finishing Xenogears. The game just has soooooo many boring and tedious parts. I never felt excited to do a dungeon, because I knew it was just going to be another shitty slog fest. That ain't how it supposed to be man. So many better jrpgs on the PS1.

This is one of those games that I really wanted to play, but could never make it past a couple of hours. The dialogue is so bad. Like really bad. And it puts such a huge damper on the game, that I couldn't force myself to continue. I've tried to get into it like 2 or 3 times, but I lose all interest as soon as I start reading the dialogue.

Theres tons of games that were great upon release but now are quite lacking but we still rate them how they were.

I dont know why.

FFVII graphics were 10/10 when released but now they suck but people still say 10/10, for example.

More like catastrophe. I freaking hated SO2.

- Way too hard
- Some skills actually make the game harder and dumber (Flip, anyone?)
- That final boss can go to hell, even the normal version that is supposedly easier
- Walking animated like they're only moving their knees
- Hideous sprite scaling (Xenogears did this too)
- Awful VA
- Precis VA (yes I'm listing this separately; it was that bad)
- Grinded literally 90 levels in one dungeon
- Story wasn't even good, except the passable intro and the planet destruction sequence

Not really, no. Crash Bandicoot 2 came out the same year for the same platform and looks leagues better.

The one nice thing you can say about FF7's graphics is that the prerendered backdrops in the field look great, which they definitely do even today when you consider the game is old enough to drink, though this did come at the cost of clashing horribly with the lego characters.

The prerendered cutscenes probably looked good in 1997, before people noticed how hilariously compressed they are and before FF8 came out for the same system and put them to shame anyway.

As a whole, I'd give a maybe to the bolded. Change Grandia to Grandia II and Star Ocean to Star Ocean: The Second Story and I'd bold that as well.

Xenogears definitely wins in the Story and Soundtrack categories though...well, maybe Wild Arms and Wild Arms 2 tie with it for Soundtracks.

-Were you playing on one of the harder modes or something? Games pretty easy to beat even without using a bunch of OP melee characters. First few times I went through it, I used just Claude and a team of mages. Even without something like the Eternal Sphere, there's Mirror Slash/Ripper Blast.

-Battle skills can be turned off in the menu. And the intense Item Creation system and Skill system are my favorite thing about the game. From just up and cooking some food for early game money, or summoning a giant bunny for transport and an eagle for some mid-dungeon shopping, or forging your own accessories and powerful usable items, or straight up replicating stuff if you want to. Really made me disappointed with the direction they moved in for the sequels.

-I think you mean like they're not moving their knees. Also, it's a PS1 game.

-Were you playing the PS1 or PSP version?

-Shouldn't really have to grind for dungeons. And CoT pretty much levels you naturally by just going through it. The instant kill enemies can still go fuck themselves though.

-Story was pretty generic sci-fi. Extra background info you could get in that one quest was pretty good though. The vast amount of PA's and nearly 100 possible endings are also a nice point to tack on to two opening scenarios and other choices that affects your party line-up each playthrough.

It's still my favorite

It's still my favorite

- Maybe? I don't remember choosing a difficulty.

- You can turn them off but you can't refund the points you wasted on them.

- No, like they're only moving their knees. Or, I guess, like their head and torsos are 70-80% of their height. Lots of games on PS1 had decent animations, especially in 2D.

- PS1

- I agree, you shouldn't have to, but I did have to. I might have the number off a little (not positive as it's been a while) but I went into the final dungeon definitely below level 50 and didn't finally beat Bastard McButtface the final boss with his stupid damn dude-that-drums-on-the-ground-and-unavoidably-wipes-your-party move until definitely over 100. I wanna say it was around 30 and around 120, which is where I got 90. And in the end, I only did survive by looking up how to craft that stupid armor that makes you literally invincible thanks to Bastard McButtface living up to his name.

- I can appreciate replay value but the game has to not be a total pain in the butt.

it was town folow path to dungeon next town and never gave you a reason to backtrack (not even to buy stuff from their stores ) no sidequests i dont think it had extra bosses either

no, there is not. you call the game overrated, so you are aware that people like the game. it is literally because for them they like more about the game than what they don't like about it.

it is not a general statement about the game. it is not disagreeing with you that the game is overrated. it's merely acknowledging that there are fans that like it lol. i don't know how you don't understand this.
