I don't think a trophy system is necessary, but all the perks that go with it are.
A profile that follows you, games that follow your profile, messaging, et cetera. A good trophy system would force them to add real profiles. I've definitely noticed the absence of achievements since I bought my Switch. Something like Mario Tennis would benefit from having achievements for completing single player tournaments, in the absence of the unlockable characters that came from that mode in past games.

Honestly I buy games on Switch because they don't. If I need some "here, have a sticker for a good job" motivation to get through a game, it's a bad game.
