Pretty good franchise, IMO. Definitely not on the same level as COD, FEAR or Halo, but definitely enjoyable. Graphics tend to be great, with challenging and quite creative gameplay. Too much emphasis on plot, though.

I was interested until I found out they added open world and RPG-ish elements. Now it's a "maybe down the road on sale" game for me.

It's not open world. It's just non-linear, how you do the missions. That's not the same thing.
