-A fifth NYPD officer has died by suicide in the last two months, officials said Saturday
-Since the start of June a deputy chief, a senior detective and two patrol officers have also taken their own lives
-NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill has described the rash of suicides as a crisis for the department

A fifth NYPD officer has died by suicide in the last two months, escalating a recent crisis that has caused all levels of police leadership to speak out on the need for cops to look after their mental health and that of their colleagues.

The officer died Saturday afternoon on Staten Island, officials confirmed. The Sergeants Benevolent Association tweeted that the late officer was a sergeant, but beyond that details were not immediately available.

This most recent officer's death follows the June 5 suicide of Deputy Chief Steven Silks, the June 6 death of Det. Joseph Calabrese, the June 14 death of 29-year-old Officer Michael Caddy at the 121st Precinct in Staten Island and the June 27 death of Officer Kevin Preiss at his Long Island home.

Last month, after the deaths of Silks and Calabrese a day apart, NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill spoke exclusively with News 4 about the need for cops to seek help if they find themselves contemplating taking their own lives.

More proof mental health isn't taken seriously enough.

The average anti law enforcement mouth breather will never understand the toll a job like this takes on someones mental health.

Too busy focusing on the sensationalized bullshit the media posts about the 2% of cops that are doing the wrong thing.

I'd say its definitely a part of the problem at least.

Being a cop absolutely sucks because the bad apples seem to be the face of police enforcement.

So you do have many good cops out there just trying to do their job and they are being treated as murderers.

So imagine waking up every day to a job you despise because you made a commitment and a lot of times they cant get out because they have no other job to take and need to pay the bills. So you go on patrol and have to watch every word you say and watch every action you take because anything can be misconstrued as excessive and wrong.

But then again I wholly expect this topic to explode into people saying "that's what they signed up for!".

It's possible to think that being in law enforcement can take a heavy mental toll while also thinking officers need to be held more accountable.

Mental health issues are always more complex. We have very little understanding of how the brain works, and the government cut virtually all funding back when electrotherapy/hysterectomy/lobotomy were seen as valid treatments for dementia/MPD.

The 2% are doing the wrong thing and the other 98% of them are protecting them

And there's a razor thin 0.00001% that are pushing back on the 2% that are planting drugs and shooting black kids and they get destroyed for whistleblowing

People thinking cops are pieces of shit for acting like pieces of shit isn't a problem imo

The problem is everyone listening to sensationalist media and believing every cop is a piece of shit.

Are you one of those people?

I believe every cop is a piece of shit, since every cop upholds unfair laws and the "good" cops protect the bad. I reject your false premise of it being credited to a "sensationalist media"

You've already lost.

Cops enforce laws that are legislated through your lawmakers and elected officials.

Don't blame them enforcing stupid laws when they didn't create them.

And that's a bullshit narrative that the actual officers themselves support bad cops. Their reps support bad cops.

Again, you're bunching everyone together. Should we stereotype everybody then based on the acts of a shitty few?

Wether its the police or lawmakers, they need to be held responsible for their actions. If public service workers cant do their job correctly or take the stress then they need to get another job.

Theyre regular people like you & me and can make mistakes

A regular person shouldnt be given a license to kill. Would you want a regular person to operate surgery on you? No, youd want a professional who can do their job correctly & take the pressure, a mistake could cost you your life.

The police are bad hombres, but some I believe are good people.

Where is your evidence that every good cop defends bad cops?

For his report "Police Code of Silence: Startling Truth Revealed," he surveyed about 2,000 participants in ethics training programs.

"About a thousand officers chose not to participate though the survey was absolutely confidential, which says something about the code," says Trautman

About 530 officers said they had witnessed misconduct by another officer and did not report it

That's from 2000, I'd wager the problem got much worse in recent years

Confidentiality is a 2 way street and that's a 2,000 person survey.

No one said anything about SOME cops looking the other way. Your statement was ALL cops protect bad cops.

Ive got friends in the NYPD. Its not Anti LE rhetoric its the being overworked and not getting paid OT. While vacations being denied, while dealing with the daily dangers of police work. That pretty much boils over and helps exacerbate depression
