Does ftl have big ships? They all seemed pretty small to me. I can't think of any games I have played that have big ships. The only space games that come to mind are elite, everspace, and nms. Nothing big in those.

They are small, but they fit the theme - multiple rooms, micromanagement, anti-fleet tactics (debatably) and so on.

Imagine if you played FTL as a small 1 man fighter, it'd be hella hard (or easy?)

I like to think it would. I nearly decided on it last night, and now I'm second guessing reasons I'd dismissed it.

I'd say Wing Commander, but you technically don't command a carrier in that as much as you're just operating from one.

Starpoint Gemini 2 or this other one for PS4 that I cant remember the name of. Rogue something I think. It was free PS Plus game but I got a lot of hours out of it.

Battlefield: 1942 had a few maps with battleships and carriers. It required multiple players to operate the ships, one to drive/fire the forward guns and others to work the rear guns or AA guns. It was always fun ramming the enemy destroyers because you could capsize them.

I liked to parachute onto the enemy carrier and lay mines under the aircraft.

Thats what I thought it was. But a quick search gave me results I didnt recognize. Had a load of fun with it though. Id recommend it for anyone looking for this type of game.

This is a good time for me to exclude a few games.

Even though you can fly heavy battleships in Transcendence and various Star Wars games - they tend to control or otherwise behave in the same way as single pilot ships.

It's a completely different game. It plays more like Nuts'n'Bolts. There's the same basic items like lasers and missiles, but you build your mothership out of parts.

Individual parts can be destroyed, cutting off power to unconnected parts.

For example, if you build a 1 tile wide, but very long mothership you'll have:
1 engine (because there's only one rear facing side)
2x length guns (because you have many many many sideways faces)
1 shield (because there's only one forward facing side)

This this set up would be slow and fragile, but would have an insane number of guns on it.

You can do the opposite and make a really wide ship. Then you'd have tons of shields and engines, but only a few guns.

In both cases, if a block near the center of the ship is destroyed then you'd lose a LOT of your ship. If you make your ship more square/boxy then you'd have less facings to equip things to, but you are far less likely to have your parts break off.

Of course, if a large portion of your ship is broken off you can use your tractor beam to try and re-attach it.

Other than that the core game is the same - explore, conquer territory, possibly join a faction, etc.

...

Then you trigger the endgame and it gets dumb.... JUST LIKE THE FIRST GAME!
