How is this not all over the news? Ive heard the fire is like 1/3 the size of the continental US and the smoke is blacking out the sky in nearby cities in the middle of the day

This is a global existential event happening right now

Blame the moron the Brazilians put in charge. He apparently has attempted to seize all the foreign aid money that goes to preserving the Amazon and instead redirect it towards farmers and ranchers who are one of the main culprits in burning and deforesting the place. Then he had the audacity to get angry when several European nations froze their contributions to his country.

Im more worried about stopping it first

that rainforest absorbs a gigantic amount of carbon from the air we kinda need it. This is a global threat.

Blame the leaders the Brazilians had in charge before him that let things get so dire that they'd elect him.

You should probably be more worried about the animal life. Fires don't often result in permanent deforestation (and smaller fires can have some benefits when it comes to clearing away old or dead brush which becomes fertilizer), but endangered species living in a limited area could easily go extinct.

I'm probably going to be hated out for this, but the majority of the burning of the amazon rainforest is by poor farmers to get more farmland to survive.
I've grown more and more fine with the actual burning of it.

While I get that, there needs to be a less destructive way for small farmers to eke out a living. There are also starving people who poach endangered animals (not as many, mind you, because it's also a big money industry), but we still want those endangered animals.

If Brazil didn't have other endemic problems, they could do something like a resettlement program to encourage farmers to pursue other ways of life. That said, we could also be going overboard on conservation. Granted, losing habitat to benefit a small number of people seems a bad tradeoff regardless.

Zeus thinks there is no difference between a regular forest fire and a fire in a rainforest which is generally more resistant to large fires until humans start slashing and burning, growing to rival the size of some continents

Mead misrepresents things Zeus says in the very topic Zeus said them. Considering that people can look at the actual post rather than Mead's purposeful distortion, why does he even post?

This is true. All the cattle in the ranches that occupy the newly cleared land just learn to climb trees once the forest grows back. It's called EVOLUTION.

Your posts are Poe's Law in action. I'm not sure how you'd conflate my discussion of smaller fires with the current Amazon rain forest fire, but the first part -- that they don't often result in permanent deforestation -- remains true. That's not a matter of "normal fires" vs what you apparently view as super-magic fires, it's just a reality. Depending on the severity of the devastation it might take longer, but the "gone forever" mantra applies more to land cleared for specific purposes (farms, drilling, etc) where continuous human interference keeps the land fro being reclaimed. Of course, I realize I've wasted a few minutes debunking your lazy trolling which only took you seconds, but that's kind of the nature of that.

When you try and search for information about the fire, you mostly get advertisements for the Amazon device

Nearly 10,000 new fires spotted by satellite since Thursday

The Amazon is dangerously close to the tipping point into desertification. If they burn enough forest the ecosystem is not coming back, it will spiral into collapse. It's terrifying.

How much coverage went to Notre Dame and that fire? How many billions of dollars? Nothing happening with this. Priorities are way out of wack

Humans not wanting to face how catastrophic that is. No surprise there. Not much most people can do to stop the fire. Kinda feels like watching a giant nature train wreck right now tbh.

Mourning the loss of a historic building is much easier than facing this. Yes, losing history sucks. But this is something that can impact life on the planet. Much harder to swallow.

Of course it could be human selfishness too. I kinda think it's a mix.

This isn't a wildfire. The Amazon is being burned to the ground for money. This must be stopped. The Amazon is not the only place being razed for profit, and none of it is being put forward in the media

It's entirely human greed killing the planet. We need to acknowledge that and end it

Like I heard about it already. I don't wanna think about it.

I did also mention human selfishness. *shrugs*

A lot of people are struggling to live. Might not cover news outlets and the rich, but a lot of people probably don't have it in them to face this.

Yes... and it has not been widely covered

After the day of darkness things started coming out a bit more

And it's accelerating. More new fires being lit intentionally. It's estimated one new fire is lit per minute

It's worth noting that an indigenous tribe in Ecuador won a lawsuit against oil companies, preventing the companies from extracting resources. The courts protected the lands, and those resource hungry criminals don't give a fuck about the environment.

That has also had very little coverage. Different part of the Amazon. It's a precedent

a few things to consider

The world is actually experiencing an almost unprecedented "green boom" right now. NASA says there is more green on the earth now than 20 years ago and that gap is only supposed to get bigger.

As stupid as china can be when it comes to the environment it is worth noting that china and india both collectively plant about 1.3 million trees per year.

yes, this is terrible.
no, you probably arent gonna be able to do shit to stop it from your computer chair, and your government sure as shit isnt going to step in to stop it.

its also not going to be the end of the world. it is catastrophic but fortunately, as a species, we may have unintentionally been prepared to mitigate the worst of the damage that would have been done.
