Im pretty sure the act of painting a darker skin colour for a character act dates back centuries (and I suspect often for ridicule) and has kinda stuck around. But in modern times its socially unacceptable.

Like if an Indian dresses as a medieval European knight, he isn't gonna bleach his face.

But if a white guy wants to dress as an Arab sheikh, apparently he feels he MUST put shoe polish on his face.

I don't see the contradiction. I'm talking about the phenomenon of people doing this for costume parties, like college kids and politicians. Comedians and actors doing in it in a movie, are obviously doing it for a role so that's their reason.

Clearly I know better now, but honestly if I wanted to dress as a black character for Halloween when I was in high school and maybe even college, I would think that coloring my skin was just making it a better costume and not realize it was racist. >_>
